Fastest Starflite???

So I recall Kunkel had an '85 with a 3.6 GT 300hp that ran 92 on radar back in the day.

Well my goal (gotta have a goal right?) is to break 100mph. I think with enough setup time 425hp should do the trick.

Is this a realistic speed with this power? Comments and suggestions are welcome. I will start a build thread once I start wrenching on it (gotta buy new wrenches first.......)


A few pics of my '94 4.0L Evolution Marine Stage 5 powerhead. Supposedly a 430+ hp motor when it was built. I'm guessing it's around 415-425 at this point......if not I'll have to mill the heads a bit and run some 100 octane. :)

For sure! I honestly don't know if I will be able to drive the boat to that speed. It will take me a few seasons of practice to get close to 90 even. I'll be making baby steps.

I will have to get you a pic of a starflite down here with a v8,,I swear it most run 100,,got this giant wierd ass looking prop and it is the 1st starflite that I have seen with trim tabs,,i guess with all that mussle and speed,trim tabs are good..but he has a ton of cracks in the transom,,think about building up that transom before hooking up an engine that bigg..

Hey Rob, You should talk with Rowdy1 here on the board, he's got a built v8 on a starliner and knows his **** when It comes to these giants. Ive talked with him on the phone, he's a cool guy for sure. He gave me some tip's to dial mine in and it helped.

Im sure you can break 100 if your motor is what it's said to be. Have you looked into any MADefi stuff? Do you know what has been done to your motor? Are you gonna be using a hydraulic jackplate or any setback??
Im rooting for you man. Love the big bore carbs but anything above 4000rpm and you can watch your gas needle drop. Cruising under 3000 isnt too unreasonable though.

Rowdy1 & the 3.6 from hell are down. My madefi motor burned a piston. (more like exploded). I dont know if i lost fuel pressure/volume or, if I had a carb go bad but it looks pretty bad on that cylinder. Good luck with 100mph, I cant get an OMC lower unit to hold together with enough prop tp get close to that speed.

100mph!!! I heard & read the fastest starflite ever was radard @101.4 it was a built V8 as well, ill be content with low to mid 80's with my Vmax 150:sssh: (preety much a 150 but with 275+ hp) Aaron

damn you are cool robZ, wish we could hang out some time, that motor is a beast! I wouldn't be afraid to go 100 in a starflite, boat almost feels like it will calm down above 75, same way my MX felt at 50 and there are guys who pushed that little boat over 70. One time i had an electrical problem and the engine died going almost 70, scared the poop out of me but the boat completely righted itself, I gained a lot of respect for the hull that day. Do you have hyrdaulic steering?

Well here is the latest update from today! My buddy and I removed the 225 V6 and hung the V8 midsection and set the cowl on for a few pics. The V6 lower will require a few minutes with an angle grinder and it will be a perfect match for the V8 midsection. I hope it holds up to 400+ hp........time will tell.

I hope to have all the misc parts I'm missing sometime this week (motor mount bolts and a few gaskets) so that I can get it up and running on the hose by this time next weekend. Stay tuned for another update.

Hey , does that thing have an electric fuel pump, or is ir running the vro pumps?

Also, something I noticed. I you really need to take the stock fuel lines off all the carbs. Get 8 "t" style fittings & redo the fuel delivery system. If you make a gaint loop with the fueline & put a "t" at every carb, you will be less likely to go lean while running the hell out of it. The factory has 2 and sometimes 3 carbs feeding of of 1- 3/16 supply line. The last carb/cylinder in that group will start to go lean if you go wot & leave it there for a couple minutes. Especially on a modifyed motor. Other than that, trim it high & let-er fly

All the transom mods were done when I put the floor & stingers in. I doubled the stringers w/ 2 layers of 3/4 marine plywood,with built in knees that went all the way up to the bottow of the splash well.(the stringers & knees are all one piece) Then tied it all together with premium resin and many layers of bi-axial fiberglass cloth. If the transom moves, it has to take the stringers & splashwell with it. Its been there w/ the V8 for almost 5 years.
