I put this thread on the endless boating forum, but I will post it here now that things are back up. This lead to the speed chart posted by small block ford. (wish it said small block hemi...lol thanks for the help earlier)

I am looking @ 08' Checkmate Pulsares. The question is weather I get a 20' or 21'. The price difference is nill, so handling, hole-shot, and top speed are my issues in this big decision.

In overall length the 21' is only 10" longer than the 20', but the 20' is wider, so I wonder which will handle better in rough water. I think the weight difference in nearly zip, so that should not matter. Please help with the following questions:

If anyone owns one of these boats (I think the hull is the same 06',07',08'), what are you running for a motor and on which size boat?

What are you getting for top speeds (GPS Please)?

How is it out of the hole-shot/with a slalom(sp) skiier?

Would you get the same set-up if you were able to do it again?

I really appreciate the help, I don't plan on buying a new boat for quite a while so I would like to get the best bang for my buck.

Things have changed so much since I bought my last Checkmate, I would really appreciate your input.

Thanks Again.

Hey Mr. Hotdaddy,

Seem's like yesterday I was doing the same evaluations. Here's the thought process I went through, the decisions - my results.

First. I went with the 21' over the 20'. When you look at the boats, the 21' has better lines hands down. Weight, I belive the same. The 21' turns better, long narrow rolls into the turns fantastic. The 21' is great in rough watter. I am on a 7,000 acre lake, gets wind wipped, I can run the 21' across the tops of all but the worst seas. Some days are just not ment for boating. The "V" in front cuts through most chop, the further back part of the hull than just skips over the top. Speed and throttle control inputs make it a breeze.

We wanted a boat that would do 80 mph. on the speedo. At the time I was in the market I did not even know about GPS. I have hit 85 mph on the speedo, that must be very close to 80 GPS. A friend had a hand held, we did 77.7 GPS, that was before I ran the current set-up which is much faster.

Set up. 250 Pro XS. 27 Trophy 10" set back Engine mounted in the top mount holes. Run must be 1" to 1.5" below the pad. Torque Master 1:75 - 1 gears.

Skiing. I have a 23P High Five. Fantastic hole shot. Actually "feather" the throttle when pulling up skiers. I am 175 lbs., single ski deep water starts very easy.

I did not want to go with the 300xs. My personal opinion was too "hot" of an engine, too much fuel comsumption, etc. Additionally, the 300xs would exceed the performance paramaters I was looking for. If I had it to do over, I am not sure if I would go for the 300xs or not. A friend has one on a HydroStream. Skis, tours, everything and loves it. Additionally, very fast. Actually, maybe a little more that I am looking for. I love fast boating, my concerns come up when I think of others operating the boat. Grandson's some day soon, etc.

I LOVE the 250. The Pro XS has a slightly higher WOT range, new in 2007, I feel it will be a very strong engine. I spent a good part of 2007 breaking in the engine, and than the driver - me. I had to learn how to drive the rig over 72 -75 approx. Chine walk had been a limiting factor for me regarding top speed. I got it "down pat" late in the summer.

Driving the boat is a blast. Skiing is great. The most fun is taking it to the marina for lunch and a "pop". Inevetablly, the Mate is the center of attention drawing all the standard observations: How fast? How big a engine? How much? Were can I get one? How about a ride? Great looking boat!

Whichever way you go, you can't go wrong - enjoy.

I don't know what part of the country you are from, I suspect choice of dealers would influence your experience. Robert's Marine. Roberts Wisconsin. Bob. Just great.

Let me know if there is anyting else you would like from me on this.

Good luck

J Z Mate

Thanks for the info guys.

Ray thanks for the response....I guess we have been blessed in life when this is what we consider "hard decisions" lol

I am leaning towards the 21' at this time.

If anyone else has some input please post.

Thanks.

It is a tought choice either way the 20 or 21 are great boats.

I personally preffered the 2100 and powered it with a 225 pro XS. If I did is again I would do a 300xs and may soon do an upgrade :)

I have 4 new 21's in stock. I also do alot of custom rigging on mine that you won't get anywhere else. Here's one I just finished. http://checkmate-boats.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10115

The 21 will run 74-75 on Gps with a 225 Optimax and 81-82 with a 250 xs. The 20 is 2-3 mph faster. Anything over 75 and you will need to learn how to drive through the chinewalk. Check me for prices before you buy. Also check out my website at: http://liberatorfl.tripod.com
