I bought a 1991 Checkmate Convincor GTX from my brother-inlaw this past Sept. I live in the Lake of The Ozarks, MO area and have a great lake to boat on. As this is my first boat I would appreciate any info, or things to watch for and take care of, that anyone has to offer. I was able to take the boat out 2 times before I had to winterize it and on my second time out noticed that one of the flappers on the thru the hull exhaust doesn't shut and think I took some water in through the exhaust when a big wave hit the back of the boat. This made the boat miss for about 15 minutes. Does this sound possible? And how do I fix the flapper in the exhaust, as far as I know the boat is completely factory except the engine(454 magnum) has been modified. Thanks for any input!

yes you can take water thru the exhaust, did it ever smooth out ? water does not compress and usually does major damage to the engine, I lost 2 in a bad storm last year from a huge wave we got from, killed both engine while running..forced water all the way thru the carbs !!! thank God for insurance !!! Yes it finally smoothed out and ran great again after about 15 minutes. The flapper should have prevented this but was stuck open.

the flappers work most of the time, but not always, mine were all working right, but when the wave hit the engines was running so they were open, they were forced open and killed the engines....never saw one that bad...even filled the carbs with sand that was mixed with the water !!! it locked both engine up in a instant !!! glad yours came back...you were lucky
