Looking to purchase an 1984 Checkmate Ambassador 20' on a 4 wheel trailer. I have a 3500 # hitch on it and will only be trailering it short distances. (RV will be pulling it when we go any distance).
Will the 6 cylinder in ther Montana do ok or am I Asking for trouble?
New to the group but it is a wealth of info. Thanks
Sam

Personally, I wouldn't, I would look for something with a heavier rear suspension on it, that type of van is not equipped to handle towing a heavier boat like that.
I think that everything from the suspension to the brakes is too light for towing that heavy a boat.

A Montana wouldn't be my first choice either. You would be much better served with something that is rear wheel drive.
Montanas are also getting a bit of a reputation for blowing trannies, and towing a 20' boat probably wouldn't help matters much.

It will be ok for short distances BUT turn the overdrive OFF!!!!!! I work at the dealer and have seen several used to tow larger boats with no problem. If you have the air ride suspension the better off you are.Make sure you keep the trans fluid clean if it starts to turn dark change it.But all in all you should be ok.just my 2c from what ive seen. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Short distances and good launch ramps you'll be OK. If you've got the 3.4 watch the temp gauge closely, as the 3.4's are getting a reputation for head gaskets too.........
You'd be much happier with a 4 wheel drive if you use dirt launch ramps like I do...........
