I have a 2002 Pulsare Longdeck, it has the stock 5.5" cmc manual jackplate. I have just purchased the 2003 Optimax 250xs. I have a lab finished Lightning ET 28p prop. I would like to know a good engine heighth to start my experimenting. I have a water pressure gauge and would like to know where this should read to be safe. Can you please give me the distance from the pad bottom to prop shaft center measurement. I want to plane well with excellent top speed. Any suggestions would be helpful. I will take any suggestions. Thanksgerikpennock182@hotmail.com

If you have a torquemaster case, I would recommend setting the propshaft 1-1/2" to 1-1/4" below the pad. You shouldn't run a torquemaster higher then an inch below the pad, though you can run it higher than a stock case. I'm not familiar with you're motor, if it has a stock case, others on this board can tell you how high to safely run it.
Either way, I would just start low (maybe 2-1/2" below pad) and work my way up. It doesn't take long to find the sweet spot.

Before I switched my 5.5" CMC over to a 10.5" RapidJack, I could run my lower unit about 2" below the pad before I began to see water fluctuation with my torquemaster. Still safe at most speeds, but any higher and the pressure started to drop. If you have the sportmaster, then maybe start at 2" below and go up from there. IF you have the torquemaster and want holeshot and top end, then start around 3" below the pad and play from there.
I ended up keeping my torquemaster at 3.5" below the pad because of all the weight I'd put up front (bowrider) when pulling skis and tubes.
Now that I have the 10.5" setback, I can probably run my torquemaster a little higher. Next weekend I'll try it at 1" below the pad and see what the water pressure looks like.

Thanks for your reply. My motor is Mercury's new this year 2003 Optimax 250xs with a torquemaster gearcase 1.75:1. Right now I'm going to try the lab finished 28 pitch Lightning ET. What motor was your torquemaster on and what boat(specify details on setup)? And what year? Thanks
My setup is on the bottom of all my posts except for the lower unit, I'll fix that tonight: http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The torquemaster is designed to run at 1" below pad and still maintain recommended water pressure, (I think 12psi at wot). The inlet holes are lower than on a stock case and the added scoops help direct water.
When I had a torquemaster with my 225 Promax on my Pulsare, it ran best top speed at 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" below pad with a 24" Trophy Plus. I had plenty of water pressure at wot, up around 20psi if I remember correctly.

I borrowed a 'regular' 24" Trophy to try. I had a trophy on my Hydrostream Virage and it was a great prop. Can't wait to try this one. It's had the leading edge filed, so it's not new condition but we'll see how she runs.........
