View Full Version : SAFETY NOTICE
I'm putting together a Hydrostream Vector with an older Merc XR2 outboard. I've never owned a high performance boat that was this old, and while building it up I found a safety problem with the older Merc V6 motors. Take a look at this thread from Scream and Fly:

Thanks for the heads up JW.
That little arm is a really important part when you think about it. It's something I haven't given too much thought to, but now will. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/thumb.gif

SAFETY NOTICE...continued...
The "steering arm" is one weak link (on older motors)... but fine in most cases. I have only heard of them failing in offshore and GP racing where heavy side loads and steering shock was experienced. If yours isn't rusted away...I would be more concerned with the following:
Don't overlook the ONE 3/8" steering attaching bolt!!! Too often, these bolts are replaced with improper grade or material hardware... remember "BUBBA" and his weed-eater 300X Pulsare? Even though he had hydrolic steering, that accident resulted from a single bolt shearing off!!! Not all stainless is the same! You need a high-quality (aircraft, grade 8, or hardened equivilant) in stainless... Your safety (and life) are all depending on that ONE bolt! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Thanks for adding the bolt info JR, here's more:
As far as that bolt goes, Mercury has one recommended bolt now (which I purchased Saturday) It's an ARP bolt, part number: 10-849838
