I bought a 1986 mariner 175 recently; and now there is 1989 merc 175 FS on this board. I initially had second thoughts due to changes from 85 to 89. mainly due to cosmetics and changes made to the mid sections.

My first question is how different will these two motors be? My understanding is that the 2.4L 175 carbed power heads should be interchangeable, right?

Second Question. All other things being equal will there be any noticeable difference in power between the two engines?

Last question. Are the clam shell cowlings interchangeable? And, will the after market "alien" cowlings fit all 2.4L mercs?

Thanks

as far as i know the 86 - 89 2.4's are the same. there will be minimal differences in the electronics but thats it. HP will be the same as long as the engines are both in good condition.

the cowls will work i think you have to modify the base plate though.

what are you going to have to do to make one opposite rotation

Not wanting to open a "can o worms", cuz there are alot of strong opinions on this. However; I don't plan on using counter rotating props at this point. The motors should operate fine w/out them. That being said I plan on making them counter rotating at some point in the future when I want more performance. All that would be neccessary is to find a L rotating lower. There are conversions out there, but they carry a hefty price tag.

So for now I'll run them as is and wait for a lower at the right price.
