'83 Merc Black Max 150 (6 cyl) starts and runs like a Swiss watch with out the battery...ha. I have had the motor for 2.5 years and just happened to notice the raw water exit (whatever its called, after it goes through engine and cools) is throwing water inconsistently or intermitantly. Meaning, the water spray at the back of the motor sprays a high stream for about 1 sec then stops for two. Sprays for about one second then stops for one or two. It does not maintain a constant stream. I just noticed this, is it a problem? Thermostat? Impellar? or is this just the norm. I dont know why I would not have noticed it before...

P.S. It is on a 1983 Checkmate 186 Exciter-Navy blue/silver metallic flake.

Is it doing this on the hose or in the water? Does it only do it when it's first started or all the time? Have you ever changed the water pump in the 2 1/2 years you've owned it? If not, I'd start with a thermostat assembly and then go from there.

Got any pics of the Exciter??

if you are noticing it at idle, i would say it is normal.(mine does it) the stats open and close while maintaining the temp. of the engine. it will be more apt to do it when the water is colder, like early season. if the pump is older than 2 years change it.

Open an account with photobucket.com and upload the pictures there. Then copy the "Direct URL" and click the "Insert Image" button on the "Reply to Thread" screen and paste the URL. Make sure it doesn't say http:// twice.

If you did it right the picture should appear in the text box after you hit ok.

Become a supporting member to upload your pics here. Its a small donation to the site to help Chris with all the computer stuff he needs to keep the site going. This site is something he does with his free time it has no ties to Checkmate Boats

I think you may have an Eluder from the looks of your avatar. Hard for my old eyes to tell if it's a bow rider in the small avatar pic, but that windshield is definately not an Exciter windshield.

Sounds pretty normal. When I first start mine it dribbles and spits until 140 degrees the begins to make a more steady stream. Check your thermostats, clean the popett valve and put a new water pump in every year--need it or not. I have water pressure guage and water temp guage, cheap insurance.

If it's slow it must be an OMC.
