View Full Version : BEACHING YOUR BOAT

Big Red

It just might be me, but I am very anal about my boat. I would never beach my boat or buy a boat that has been beached. The bottom of my boat is as slick as the top " NO SCRATCHES " . I also see alot of people pull up to a dock and not use bumpers.

I know alot of people beach their boats but here is a pole to see how many peoples boats are all scratched up.

I don't take my boat out anywhere beaching is possible, but if I did I still wouldn't. Not really for scratches ( my check isn't flawless thanks to previous owners ) but you never know whats there until you hit it, hard! Momentum is worse than pressure, the more weight there is the more impact with each foot per second you move. 2mph might seem very slow but when you have 1,500lbs+ moving at that speed the damage can be extreme!!! If you are going to beach then invest in a keel protector at least!!!

When I canoe'd the suwanee 10 years ago (Boy Scouts) I saw a nice little ski boat water-logged with a nice big hole in the keel from a chunk of caprock under the mud :shakehead:.

I wouldn't say my bottom is scratched from the fine sand,,but the center does not shine anymore,,dull but still smooth..need to find a beach with a finer sand to bring the shine back ,,,lol....Wife don't like to go in water,so I need to beach it,,at 1st I wouldn't beach it but got tired of hearing,,Hon can you get the sun tan lotion,HON can you get me a soda,Hon can you get me,can you get me..Now I beach it and say get it yourself???LOL

Well, I dont have a New boat, so we use it. We climb all over it with sandy feet, beach it, and do whatever. Our goal is to have fun and use the boat. We do not abuse it, but it gets used.

I own 1 very used checkmate. Really a 14 yr to me, $21,000 boat is like a cigeratte lighter, use it up and diguard. Sure in a perfect world I wood'nt of evered beached either, but its not a perfect world is it.
So enjoy your boat till its end.

I rarely beach my boat, but I have on ocassion, only if a nice soft sandy beach. and my 'mate is an '89 with a bottom as nice as most newer boats!
(some but not many or bad scratches) so I have to answer yes!

It all depends upon the bottom and conditions...if there are shells, rocks, etc. no beaching!! Soft sand or mud bottom, no problem...except if there are alot of boat wakes..

I beach my boats on sand only. Otherwise I anchor.

I do the same. If I dont know the surface I get out to see it first.

I beach mine on river sand all the time. If it's anything other than sand, I find an old tire or use a bumper to set on the keel. There's not a lot of 20 year old boats where I boat that look as good as mine. I take extreme care of the top and that's what I like.

Mine too. Its an 88 but shows like new. The entire boat doesnt even have a scratch on it, top or bottom.

As everyone else says I beach in sand or mud. Take care of your boat or not I think you would have to be a moron to beach somewhere where you are not sure of the bottom. ;)

I'm with Boston Predictor. What drives me nuts though is the few times I've been careless while docking. My wife or friends and I are'nt always on the same page. I have vowed to always use bumpers this year!

if you hit the beach with enough speed, you can get the boat to tilt to one side, then you get right in and out of it!!!:cheers

good idea, ....right??

I carry 2 anchors so I don't have to beach, my Mate floats in less than a foot of water with the motor up.

I always have 2 anchors on board. I occasionally beach it though. No worse putting a few fine scratches on it than running sand paper over the bottom is there? You can't go fast with a beautiful shine on the bottom, too sticky!

I only beach it when the sand is soft and I check before I pull up to shore. I don't beach often but from time to time I think your ok as long as you use good judgment... More often I will anchor and run a line to shore to keep the boat off the shoreline.

Ummmm I beach it occasionally, but I think my definition is a little different than some, I usually hop out in the shallows and pull her up by hand if the sand is soft/muddy. Id never think of coming haulin in to beach it.

This is exactly what i do...my last 2 CM were black hull and were perfect after many years of beaching..on the contrary of a friend who as a yellow Baja, wich every year has to be rebuffed (and he beach it the same way)..His whole boat has to be rebuffed every spring, and careful w/the graphics cause the are vinyl over paint.. :irked:

I guess will have all different views. 3 to 4 feet of water is the closest mine comes to the beach. And if you do not wash your feet off your getting left.

AMEN on that one Red.

Keep your sneakers in the car and wash your feet/sandles before you get in.

Also, Don't even come on my boat with ANY metal buttons or cargo shorts.

Bathing suits without buttons or metal peices only..........the woman can go without the suits!!!

When people step on your seats when they climb abord. When people are boarding my boat, I don't say, "watch your step" I say don't step on my F#$%ing seats!!!:yell::pissed::irked:

I had my first experience with this, this weekend when i trailered my mate to a far away lake with some friends with boats. We had a great time, but i was amazed at the lack of concern for the boats finish and the vinyl seats. ppl would just blutz down on anything with shoes and what not. I quickly told everyone to keep their shoes off and step carefully about the boat. There was no sand or mud, just decent clean water, but still... common sense folks!! :irked:

You can not get in my boat without stepping on seats some how as it is to big. I will not allow shoes but still put towels down. Many people dont care. I think you must define the difference between beaching and docking. I use bumpers when docking but will beach on sand if I know their is not any rocks.

I may be a prick, but when I tie up to people I won't hesitate to let them know (friends or not) "if you don't respect your stuff, that is fine......but YOU WILL RESPECT MINE!"

New boat, old boat, don't matter. There is a reason that my ***** looks the way it does.

I gotta get off this thread, I am getting all pissed because everyone always makes fun of my compulsive cleanliness, but little do they know that there is a forum full of us!!!!!!!!!!:pissed::cheers

I will not be beaching my Enticer, but only because the ski pylon keeps me from trimming the engine all the way up. I can still leave it in 2' water though, close enough.
Big Red, I totally hear you on being anal with a $30k boat. That's a big part of why I chose to look at used boats. I didn't want all that anal-ness to keep me from having a good time. Now that I've put in time cleaning up and fixing (a little) the boat, I'm starting to get a little protective. We'll see how it goes...

I like the solid red on my boat but I fear every time I go to the lake I might get it scratched. Its easy to hide a scratch on white but not red. But on the other hand I love the red. So far thew its life of 12 years it has not been scratched top or bottom side. I am getting to the point now where I don't even like my freinds in the boat.

I have no plans on selling but I have been looking for a pontoon with a 90 or bigger. I think it would be nice to crash into a dock once in awhile or spill a beer in the floor.

Well I used to own an 89 Winner 20' bowrider and we beached it. It had a keel guard on it so not so bad, some of the lakes here in AZ have good coves with granite sandy beaches but will tear it up if not careful. My jetmate has been beached by the previous owner and is a bit scratched up. The real question is to beach or not to beach. Ask not what your beach can do for you but what you can do for your beach. Its not a matter of Right versus left but a matter of Right versus wrong...

I was just curious what everyone uses for mudflaps to protect your boat from rocks? I was looking at cabelas and they have some called rock tamers that attach to your reese hitch so it is not a permanent mud flap. Just looking for ideas!!

Thanks,

Jason
