Had some 'Checkmate' fun yesterday!

Was on the phone yesterday when I heard a noise on the water. Looked out and saw a dark red/white Checkmate making circles and noise in front of my dock. I know the boat, it's a 1989 Spectra 170. I tried to buy it years ago. In fact, I raced that boat years ago when I had my other '92 Pulse 171 with the XR6. I beat him pretty bad back then. I look out the spotting scope, and I see another Checkmate on the lake that I know also, so down I go to uncover mine :thumb:

I get warmed up about the time he's going by again so the chase is on. He's about 3 boat lengths ahead, and we're going the same speed all the way down the lake. Next run I'm about 5 boat lengths ahead, and I think he's barely gaining on me. Sure is fun to watch another checkmate that close at speed, both front and back! :surf: He should be able to whip on me, as my 135 tops out at 55 and he's got a 150 XR4 on the back, but maybe my driving skills in the heavy chop is better than his ;) Or maybe my 2.0 135 is putting out more power than it claims, and his XR4 is down on power. Who knows, we're having a blast.

I am feeling guilty for my two Jack (Parsons) Russel terriers that I took along for the ride :sick:

Ohhh, That's great! I'm glad I'm not the only one that will hurry and jump in my boat while I'm at the sand bar and see a Baja or fountain screaming by and hurry and push it off and chase him down!

I'm REALLY tempted to get a 2.5 150-200 and a tight fitting bow-cover and chase down the bass boats that go ripping up and down my lake :D
But I have to keep reminding myself that this Pulse is my wife's TUBING boat, not my race boat. In fact, todays project is to install the SE200 hydrofoil...........:(

Hey Jim, I'm glad the boat is running good. It's cool to pass another Cmate but it's GREAT to put a whoopin on a Baja!!!

Jw I can trailer my Pulse170 up there and have a little fun w/those bass boats. She's screaming w/the 25P Tempest Plus prop I've added and still haven't jacked the motor up yet.;)

only saw one other checky yesterday but he would have handed me my lunch... i did run into a guy w/ a pontoon that wanted to race......hehe. it had an inboard outboard and the thing would run in the low sixties best i could tell when i was playing with him! i was shocked to see a pontoon that would got that fast! it was a good day on the water and i'm fried!!!ouch:cheers

I got the hydrofoil clamped on today, but a storm blew in just as I was finishing so I couldn't test it to see what top speed I've lost. The clamp mechanism looks like it'll interfere with the water coming off the prop along the bottom of the cavitation plate. A good run will tell what I've gained in hole-shot and slow planing and what I've lost in handling and top speed, if any. The good news is there's no holes in the cavatation plate, so if I hate it, I can remove the whole thing and sell it to someone else that needs one :)

I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of difference there is w/ or w/o your hydrofoil. For now I can't test out the difference on mine because I'll be staying dry for awhile now that my lower unit is blown :yell:
