Since my lower unit on my Johnson 120 blew I've been weighing my options. In the process I found a 1996 Johnson 150 v6 Looper for $1,800. It looks very clean and the guy has all the equip to mount it and hook it up at his house. He is going to give me the control box and all cables from the boat because he is junking the boat after the floor caved in (1972 center console) and he just bought a brand new boat.

The engine was part of a twin setup, so my question is: Will my existing throttle cables and steering for my 1989 Johnson 120 v4 work on the 1996 Johnson 150 v6? His boat is over 20' so the existing cables on his boat are too long.

The engine on my 120 works great, but fixing/replacing the lower unit can cost me up to $1,500 according to my research. So why not max out my hp rating for a few $$$ more? I can always hold on to the old 120hp and keep it clean for future projects/sale.

What do yall think?

PapaMac, I would go with the newer motor for a few more dollars. I would keep the 140 or part it out to recover some of your costs.

I've swapped cables from a V4 to a V6. End were the same. Steering should work as well. Bet that 150 looper will make you smile.

If it's slow it must be an OMC.
