I have 1979 200hp v6 merc it will run, sometimes quiete well and when it seem to get hot i just dies and when it does it will not stat for probaly half an hour or so. I have run it direct from a gas can eliminated tank and fuel line, cleaned filter at f pump, done a compression test all 120+ and have checkked the coils (have two that might be bad but have good spark on all when cold). I really do not know where to go from here. Oh aand when it runs cold itpukes alot of gas and oil out the exhaust. should I be checking the stator or giving the carbs a more thourough cleaning.

sounds like the stator is bad.

I had a problem like this on my 79 200 black max. If all your cooling and fuel is ok check what they call the mercury tilt switch. The switch is their to cut the engine off if its rasied to high. Just bypass it, the mercury went bad in mine and would cut the boat off for no reason going down the lake. Their is mercury in it like a house T-stat. This took me 8 trips to the lake to figure out what was wrong no manual gives any trouble shootting for this switch.

Try cleaning the carbs out just in case, but it sounds more like stator - did you test it? I actually have a brand new stator off my 82' that was only used less than 1 hour if you are interested

Sounds like the stator. Pull the plugs, stick them in the wire ends and have some one crank it for you while you check each plug for fire. My bet is that one side of the motor will have fire and one won't. Probably the left side will be dead. This means the low side of the stator is bad. Runs like hell wide open, but won't idle at all. boatman

I forgot to metion inmy earlier post that I did check for spark on the engine cold and it has good spark, mty question is with a bad stator will it lose spark when it gets hot and is the top bearing on the crank starting to go briinging on the problems with the stator.

also could be ignition related...... i had a ignition box go bad and it caused crazy things to happen- it wouldn't run wide open for about a half hour, then it would be fine for the rest of the day. there is no real good way to test your boxes though! my 2 cents-ross

lots of times a bad stator will work when cold and then quit after it warms up. in my case, the time it took to quit from heat got shorter and shorter untill i figured it out.

I think the stator is the problem from what I have read, I guess now is just top make sure the top bearing is still good. If the top seal is not showing any signs of leaking should I feel safe that the stator just went as a result of age and the top bearing is ok.
