DOes any body know the procedure to test the stator on my 79 merc, I know that a basic test can be done with an ohm meter but I have lost the post where it is and I really need to figure out that test so I can order parts and get it together for the weekend. Please anybody with a merc manual I would really appreciate some help.

the best way is to check voltage output with a dva meter. i learned a lot on s&f, do a search for how, and what values that the stator should put out are. the dva reading meter is a must.

Yup, can't be done without a DVA. Rapair/CDI sells one for about $100. Bass and Walleye Boats had a article on a new manufacturer who was selling them for about $50...but I cannot remember the name.
You should also order a service manual from your Merc dealer for that motor. The random approach to repairs never works. They have detailed trouble shooting steps that will be a big help.

BOaty is fixed it was about four different things 1. broken equallization line behind switch boxes 2. for sure one bad coil, possibly two under full load 3. Ripped fuel pump diaphram 4. NO choke plunger ie no chke unless held by hand and 5. Suspect fuel check valve on tank. THe fuel pump diaphram was the biggest issue but everything contributed. Have yet to replace the bad coil but went for a spin any way and this boat hits 60 mph without even trimming out. When I say bad coil it will stil firing but probably not 100 percent of the time under full load.
