hey guys, i have a 81 sportfire with a 87 blackmax 150 on it.(needafunboat's old boat). My problem i am having is that when i trim the motor down while in the water it makes a clicking noise. it goes down but there is just a noise. also say if i am idling in shallow water and my trim is up, when i give it a little throttle the motor seems to fall back to a lower trim? i think i have to rebuild the trim unit, but i wanted to get other opinions and/or advice to maybe better my judgment. thanks for the help

If you are trimmed up past the double trim cylinders it will always drop down to that level if you give it gas. They have a bypass valve that only allows that height while under forward thrust. Not sure about the click.

ok cool, so its kinda like a safety feature. thats what i was thinking but, it seemed odd because i feel like i can trim up higher when i am moving(unless it just seems that way since i am going faster and the smaller angle is more exaggerated). the clicking sounds sounds almost like a stripped gear of some sort. almost like two gears meshing are slipping. i am going to go out today and make sure the trim cylinders and make sure there is no build up on them.
thanks for the help:cheers

Hi Cody,
I never had any weird trim stuff on that boat. Mark's dead on about the single/double cylinder deal.
Yeah - the boat feels like you should be able to run it with the trim up more. My guess is that with the 6" setback on that boat - it sits pretty nose-high when you're off plane. So the back end is dug in to a deeper depth and at a greater angle.
The clicking is weird- never felt that. My guess is something is binding (obviously). I don't know - but I'd guess a bad trim cylinder will leak and not make a clicking noise.

Mine will make the same noise from time to time. You need lubrication! Put some grease in all the fittings(you need grease in the tilt tube area). Also, it helps to put a spot of water proof grease on the tips of the 2 "trim rams". The noise on mine stops when I get past the trim stage. boatman
