OK... wife is getting a little "concerned" with me and this 100+MPH water rocket I'm playing with...wants me to get a Checkmate BOW RIDER!!!
It's a 1990 SONIC 21'... boat was cutom built by JR Custom Marine and was factory rigged with twin Merc's. This boat is really trick...has a unique Mod-V hull design with mini-tunnels as lifting strakes and has a nice 12" wide pad running down the last 6' of the center. It also has the cool left-hand steering with center councel with the "airplane cockpit full of gauges", and the twin zero-effort style contols for both the motors in it...YES...it looks like this boat means business!!!
Motors are 1992-94 style 2.5L's with CLE counter-rotating lower units...Both motors are being freshened up and modified...(pre-mix, tuners, milled heads, reeds, velocity stacks, solid mounts, relieved center section, dry-stacked, ported, etc.)...they should pull around 245hp each @ 6500-7000rpm on premium 92 unleaded...(thats 490HP on a 21' boat weighing under 2000lbs water-ready)!!! Boat should run 100+ with the new Spenelli 30p clevers and some dial-in time...
Also has a matching 1990 Myco tandom axle trailer custom built for the boat...
Seriously BAD-A$$ water-toy!!! I will sell complete turn-key package or without the motors... and I will consider a TRADE for a clean 21'-23' Checkmate open bow!!! Jim

Whats the difference, post a Sonic for sale without a picture on a Checkmate site or with a picture on a Checkmate site? This site is for PEOPLE who like checkmates.I dont see why it would hurt if you posted an ad of a b*stard boat you bought out of ignorance. You still love Checkmates, right?

I just can't do the "all red" again. I sold my Warlock offshore last fall that was RED with black & gray stripes... too HOT, and too much maintainance!!! Kips boat is a good deal, but by the time I get a custom trailer, cover, and set it up with a 300X......$35000+ and I don't get my color choice??? http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
So I'm still looking... maybe some speed freak that wants this 21' Sonic "water missle" will swap me something I can use with the family! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

175checkmate... Too small...I need a 21' open bow for the family! Get that thing together...boating season's here!!!
This Sonic is also simi-apart right now... I'm finishing up the motor builds (always more power)! Just got my new props...($$$$ when you have to buy two custom stainless)...twins are why cool except on the wallet and at the gas pump!!! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

PRICE??? Woops...So you want to own this boat???
I will sell it COMPLETE or WITHOUT MOTORS:
Hull, trailer, cover...MUST SEE! $6000/offer?
(comes with all rigging ready for your power)
With motors & props...TURN KEY...$13,000???
(two modified 2.5L's with CLE lowers and a set of fresh $$$$ Merc 30p "lab'd" choppers)
Add up what the parts alone are worth and this is a steal of a deal!!! Boat is very solid but could use some minor detailing TLC to make it "mint"... the longer I have it, the nicer it gets (but the price will go UP depending on time and money I invest). This boats probably worth $17,000+ detailed and dialed in. Ya gotta see it to believe it! Sorry, no test "PILOTS"...
RARE BOAT and you can be the envy at the lake this summer... Yes... this things a mega ATTENTION GETTER for a SPEED FREAK (like me)!

Hey LEEDO... Yes, I just sold my Checkmate Spectra 170BR (was a nice boat but a bit too small for where I boat). I still have a few more water toys to "play" with...
1947 Chris Craft 22' Sportsman ("classic woody") also for sale...
1994 Dynasty SportJet
1990 Sonic w/Twin 2.5L's (for sale)
1992 Hobie Cat 16'
1988 Sunfish
2000 Sea-doo GTI's (2)
1995 Sea-doo HX
AND "ALWAYS LOOKING" for the next toy!!!
JUPITER PULSAIR... THANKS MAN, I LOVE THAT ONE!!! You brightened my day for sure... Too bad I would only be left with a roll of duct tape and a card-board boat (maybe some bayliner stickers to decorate it)!!!
ZO6... Photos coming soon (when I get time or someone seriously interested)... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
This Sonic is a FUN TOY to play with for sure, but again, I quote my wife "Isn't it time you get a family friendly performance boat"... Just remember those words when a 21' Pulsair with a 300X is in the garage!!! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

I've been out of the state for the past week+, and haven't had much time to wrench on it yet. I had to go fetch my two CLE lowers (guy never got them done yet either...I was having them inspected, set-up to specs, and resealed)...
I found someone else to do it next week...and while I'm at it, the starboard 2.5L powerhead had a little lower compression on a few holes than I liked (leakdown indicated bad rings)... I pulled the heads and the cylinder walls looked excellent so that powerhead is getting redone (honed/pistons/rings/etc.) to make it 100% also... I want everything to be right!!!
Probably won't be water ready until July 10th or so...But I have vacation time to burn so it should be SOON.... I'll keep you posted! Jim

If you want some attention... this boat is it!!
All the motor mods were done, everything gone thru, freshed up and built right (solid mounts, velocity stacks, WH39 carbs, relieved midsections (drilled like factory 280 sport), exhaust can removed, flow ported exhaust adapter and tuner, modified cooling, 33cc performance heads, etc.). Motors run AWESOME!!!
HOW FAST??? I don't know yet... Spent a few hours of break-in at a local lake dialing everything in... 45mph speed limit and a sheriff that was ready to write a ticket so I kept it cool...all I can say is this things a BEAST!!!
I hope to get more seat time on the "big lake" this weekend (no speed limit) to dial it in, air it out, and post some GPS numbers... Jim.

jrumon
09-03-2004, 01:45 AM
YES... SONIC is together and running awesome...motor mods ALL done, lower units done, running great and sounds KILLER!!! Top speed is yet to be determined...getting 90+ on GPS (not wide open) buts carbs are jetted rich right now and I'm running about 45:1 premix oil ratio to be safe. It's hard for me to get the water conditions for a safe top end on Lake Huron and I really should put some EGT's on the motors to fine tune them before I put the hammer all the way down!!!
CASH OR TRADES??? Wife wants it G-O-N-E!!!!!!

Finally got some hours on the boat... water conditions were A-1 all weekend so I played and played, and got some GPS numbers...
60MPH cruise speed @ 4000 RPM...
96MPH with 4 adults @ 1/2 tanks of fuel...
100.9MPH with 2 adults...
102.1MPH with just me!!!
For all you techno's, thats 7000+RPM swinging a set of 31P "Lab" clevers, boat is supprisingly stable on the pad at speed... anyone have a set of 32's to try??? Jim.

FYI...MOTORS... These are 2.5L carb motors...both freshly modified summer of 2004. They are both tuned and jetted to run on 91+ octane premium pump gas and premix the oil with Merc premium pre-mix at 40:1 (no oil injection). They have performance head work, so higher compression than stock... Compression test was 135-140psi on all 12 holes Oct-2004 (they will run OK on 89 marina fuel if jetted up a bit). They are 20" shafts and have the merc racing offshore CLE lower units (2-hole, shiftable F-N-R, straight skeg style). I would consider selling the motors AS A MATCHING PAIR but only if I get buyers lined up for #1. hull/trailer, and #2 motors (with or without Merc LAB props).
Care to make an offer on them and how soon would you need them??? I may still have an interested buyer in the hull from a month or so back.

thats what i need. my friend builds motors and
we have lots of 2.4 and 2.5's but i dont want to
put twins on my 85 enchanter yet. want to put them on about a 24 v-bottom, if you know where on is? my "merc man" is a merc genious, and he
can shave enough horsepower out of my 2.5l, 200,
that im beating 225 opti maxes, and 300 v8 evins
on boats like mine. seen 79mph on gps. i want to
leave my set-up as is, and go 3 litre, but ill
do anything. id like to see yours

Hmmmm....Interesting boat. Is the hull like a Hygrostream Valaro? Sounds like it. With 490 hp that modified air packer should go way, way over 100+, Right?

Please...NO comparison to a hydrostream!!! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/sick.gif
This is a 21'6" boat with 8' wide beam. It's more similar to a Superboat 21 or Challanger 21 with a little shallower hull, special tunnel-type lifting strakes, and a flat pad for stability in the 100+MPH zone. This is a heavy lay-up boat (offshore quality) and tips the scales at about 2500lbs with the twin Mercs. It will also handle running in 18" chop with ease! Best speed so far was 102.1mph GPS and really needs more prop (32p's)? I bet with some bigger props, a set of EGT's so I can fine tune jetting...I bet 110mph is possible! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
