MY SILVER FLAKE HAS TURNED TO GOLD

THE SILVER METAL FLAKE TRIM ON MY 86 HAS TURNED GOLD.THE GOLD FLAKE LOOKS OK BUT IF I WANTED TO BRING THE SILVER FLAKE BACK CAN IT BE DONE? I WAS TOLD THAT ONLY THE CLEAR COAT HAS TURNED AND THAT A GOOD WET SANDING THEN BUFFING WILL BRING IT BACK TO SILVER. WHAT DO YOU THINK? DO I TRY AND BRING BACK THE SILVER OR BE HAPPY WITH THE GOLD? Clear gelcoat does have a tendency to yellow especially if its very thick, you may have some good results if you sand and buff it.

If you sand, and your Gold flake turns silver you sanded too far.

Here's the best way to deal with it. Just decide you like gold better than silver. I have two and both have turned gold. I've sanded and buffed to a showroom finish and they're still gold. I think it's yellowed right through. Did I mention I love gold flake!

mine was really gold when i got it. you can get some of it out but not all of it. you will have many hours to produce minimal results. unless yours is not yellow too badly. (is that proper english?)

I moved down some 18 years ago from the upper Ohio vally. Lived in Wheeling,Wva. along the banks of the Ohio river. Wheeling is About 7 hours north of Roanoke. Roanoke winters are mild the mountains are beautiful. The rivers are full of small mouth and the local lake offers about 500 miles of shoreline. If you want the silver back, it is attainable. Just lots of hours and elbow grease. My silver flake was in terrible shape. I wet sanded until I had no fingerprints left (800 to 1200 to 1500, even 600 in some really bad places). Lots of clean paper, lots of clean water. Now lots of beautiful silver flakes shining against the sun!!! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Make sure you use a good cleaner first to get off whatever junk is on it (wax, etc.). After that, I cleared it with Dupont clear, and it was back to new. Hope this helps. Depending on the shape, you can just wet-sand, and buff and see what happens - it might not be as bad as you think.
