Thought I would start a new thread for my Predictor Project as all my other pictures got moved and now no one can see them.

The boat is a 1989 Checkmate Predictor.

I am putting down a barrier coat before I prime. I am using the Interlux Interprotect 2000 kit. This will prevent moisture from getting though to the fiberglass and help keep those blisters from coming back.
The boat is being worked on in my fathers garage. We attempted to apply this stuff last weekend, however my dad lost power at his house on Friaday afternoon, and it didnt come back on till monday.
here is a link to the product

Adam L.
03-07-2006, 05:28 PM
The paint I am using does not require a clear coat. THe paint has a super high gloss finish. Check out Gus's yellow and black Trimate paint job. I am using a product similar to what he used.

how many coats are needed? is primer required if you are going over top of the old gel coat?

Adam L.
03-08-2006, 09:30 AM
Not sure how many coats were going to lay down. I guess I am just going to see how it goes. The paint that I am using requires an epoxy primer, plus I sanded all the gelcoat off the bottom to get rid of the blisters. I am laying down a barrier coat, then primer, then the paint. I am getting excited!!!!

03-08-2006, 07:28 PM
Adam. When I layed the paint on the bottom of the boat (I will do the same on the top) I layed down a light coat. Then I shot 7 more on top of that. With the single stage paint you can get it to look killer by wet sanding and ten buffing. I did a spot in the black, maybe 2x2 dry, started with 1000 grit, then 2000 grit, then buffed. The difference is amazing. The plan is if by chance the hull gets a scratch it ( I know it will) I can color sand it back out.

Adam L.
03-11-2006, 10:32 PM
It was a beautiful day up here. 50+ degrees and sunny. Three layers of barrier coat has been applied to the hull where the blisters were. 3 more coats to go, and then a quick sanding and some primer.

I cranked the heat up in the garage so it was about 75 deg. Then I shut the door and waited a week. I set it on some tires and made a line of tires for the side of the hull to rest on. We then flipped it over and rested the keel on a bunch of tires. I covered the tires with some old carpet pad.. We then set the bow on the trailer and walked the trailer back up till most of the hull was on. Then cranked it the rest of the way up.

I looked at the clear. I guess I will have to wait and see how the wet sand and buff comes out. I did on small spot on the port qtr in the black and it came out looking amazing. If the durability of there paint is half of what they say there may be no need for the clear. Time will tell.

I talked to a painter buddy of mine. Her is what he said to do. Wet sand with 1000 grit, then with 2000 grit. Then buff with mild polishing compound.
I did a spot on the black, I did it dry so it was a bit harder that doing it wet. Came out looking 100% better, smooth as a baby's butt and oh so shinny.

Boat is looking great. From the looks of the hull when you started it seems like you leave your hull in the water for long peiods of time. If this is true you may want to reconsider doing so with a painted hull or you'll end up with more blisters.

The boat has sat in fresh water from May till October for 17 seasons. We did use a barrier coat which is suppose to prevent blisters (roughly 9 coats), but I am sure over time the paint will fade and blisters may come back. If it happens, oh well, its fun painting boats :)

The water will get between the paint and the barrier coat and blister. Did you take the wet foam out of the bottom of your boat or just redo your hull? And when do we get more pics?

Adam L.

Ok, you asked for more pictures so here you go!
7 coats of red is on the top. We pulled the boat out to bake in the sun for a little bit. In a couple of hours we are going to pull the tape off to expose the black. Paint is done!!!!
Some wet sanding and buffing, then it all goes back together.

I am very happy with the way it came out, the finish is amazing. The bottom has been wet sanded and buffed and it is sweet. We are going to give the deck another week to cure before the top gets wet sanded and buffed.

Yup. I called Mike at Checkmate a little over a week ago. They dont keep a stock of covers but they have a lady there that custom makes them for any model. You can get it in any color you want. I ordered it, she made it, and I got it super fast! THe price was great (a couple hundred $$$ less than any custom uphoster around here. Give them a call, you wont be disappointed.

05-11-2006, 01:47 PM
what did that run you?

i put something together from ebay and boatersworld. i got 50 feet for 85 bucks. its the rigid back with the insert.

i lucke out on the dash trim as well. here at work we were cleaning the warhouse and found an old roll of trim from a set of fiberglass runningboards. i checked it in before we through it out.

I only needed the insert for the rubrail because the aluminum rail was in great shape. The rubber ran me $1.40 a foot, and Mike said he knew exactly how much to give me. My guess is about 40 feet. The dash molding ran me about $15, but you cant go wrong getting stuff from the factory.
The only problem now is that so much money has been dumped into the boat, there is nothing left for a new motor. I think I will be running the 115 for another season.

10-4 on the dumping money in our boats Adam. I don't think I could ever get back what I have invested. Oh well that's ok I will just keep it for a while. I still think that the smaller Checkmates are big time fun for what thy cost to fix up:thumb:

Adam the new decal looks really nice. I like the way it stands out with the black background. That decal design looks best on our size boats. Tight fit but looks best. I like it much better than the OE checkmate decal. ps- if you need any tips on installing the rub rail let me know ok.

thanks, from what I have heard the best way to get it on is to put it in a trash barrel with hot water so it gets soft, the put the bottom edge in first and use a knife to pop the top in. But, any tips are much appreciated.

But, any tips are much appreciated. Adam when you get the rubber it will be hard as heck and you will say "no way will this go in" I did my install outside on a hot day. The rubber got good and soft just by being in the sun shine. I painted dishwashing liquid on the track to help it slip in easy. You will want to have a helper to hold the rubber for you and keep some tension on it as you go. I put the top in first and used a dull old flat head screwdriver to slip the bottom up and over the bottom lip of the track. I used a rubber mallot to seat the rubber it in the track good and flush as I worked my way around the boat. I think it took about 30 min to install. You just have to push it in lil by lil and not try to rush. I think my boat came with a blue rubber rub rail? Man when I took it out it was hard as a rock and had changed colors over the years. The bottom 1/2 of it was blue and the top 1/2 of it was faded to a brownish color that was just nasty looking. The new rubber will give the boat a nice clean finished look. It will really top off all your hard work:thumb:

Well there are a few problems:

1. I am still waiting for the rub rail insert I ordered from Checkmate a week and a half ago.

2. The water is so high at my lake I cant get the docks in.

3. The boat ramp is on the other side of this tunnel, and until the water goes down I am not fitting through it.:(
