I'm looking at buying a 1989 Checkmate Spectra 201 in mint condition, with a Merc 200 with a new powerhead right out of the crate from Merc, trailer included. The owner wants $16,000.00 CDN ($10,700.00 USD). Any comments on the price? Anyone have one, how do you like it???

Malibu, I saw a similar thread at Scream and Fly.

I gather this is the same boat?

Assuming it is, I think if you have some patience you can do much better than 16K. To me that boat is probably worth in the 8-10K price range. Yes, it has a new powerhead but it's still not a new motor and the boat is 14 years old.

Last year, there were a number of Checkmates for sale in the Southern Ontario boat trader, all around the 8-12K price range throughout July and August. A number of the boats were Starflites and many of them were superior to this boat, IMO.

Granted, the prices are always higher in the spring then they are in July and August or even later in the year for that matter. But, you also have to pay PST and GST because you would be purchasing this boat from a dealer. So that would make it like $18400.00 out the door?

My advice...patience!

Yes, this is the same boat. It's on consignment so just PST so it's more like $17,280.00 out the door. I made one last offer at $14,000.00 after seeing the boat, it is in excellent condition. The guy selling it is loaded and he doesn't really care if he sells it unless he gets what he wants for it...dreamer...I told the marina to hold on to my offer incase he doesn't get any better offers.
Thanks for your advice I will hold off till the spring or summer and get something at a better price.

Malibu...

It's always a rich guy that doesn't need the money. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/sleep.gif

Listen...

I bought my mate about a year ago, after shopping around for years and years. I really wanted a Pulsare but they always wanted too much money for the used ones. So while searching, I came across a 1992, 170 Pulse B/R, 1991 Mercury XR4, and EZ Loader Trailer. I paid 10,500 Canadian, with 30 Day warranty on boat and motor from the dealer.

You got a wicked deal Chris. A good find you had... I agree, you are going to have to look for a long time before you get that one perfect boat...

Checkmates may not be the fastest boats on the water, but they are the nicest looking!

I bought mine four years ago for about 1500 dollars. I wouldn't take less than 10000 for it now. It is absolutly the best boat I have ever had. When I got it, it was full of water and leaves and needed everything replaced. All of that is pretty much behind me now. I have seen some cheap mates around. I know where a small one(under 20) for like a grand or so. I think it was in Newberry SC. Watch Ebay, there seems to be a good selection.
