As most of you are aware, Bill is going to be the proud owner of a spanking new ZT 240 this spring.
And you are going to get an exclusive seat to watch it being built. Kip has been good enough to agree to send us pictures, so we can all watch as it progresses.
The following are the first few pics from Kip. I hope you enjoy this little feature over the next month or so. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The work that you see so far is some of the most time consuming. Thay probably have the seats done already and other thing pre-assembled. Also, those pics are a couple days old already by the time Chris and I got them and they were posted. Difgferent areas do different parts of the boat, then come together.
Yeah. Everything smaller could be made then added. All they have to do is add everything else now. I still say it took more time then needed but thats the good thing of ordering it in the winter, if its late, you don't have to waste good summer time waiting because it will still be too early to run...

Bill, I think it is real cool to see your boat being built. It can put all the work in boat building into perspective. I like your choice of colors by the way. When everything is complete, it would be cool to see the finished product with a summary of features.
I hope that I can order my new custom boat someday. For now I will live vicariously through you. A new boat is just too far out of reach for a while.
Man I love Checkmate boats! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Z, unless it is raining or below freezing, I am taking her for a run the first weekend home. I will go inside the heat afterwords, I want her broken in as soon as possible. All of the rest of the work will be done at night during the week.
Your lucky. Up here we just got like what 5-6 more inches of snow? And today I am going skating on my river, meaning not even close to melting. I'm movining down there!

There is nothing wrong with that. I do that with my land vehicles. Whenever I get a boat, I'll do the same. Wife is on my side with this, has to be perfect looking and has to run perfect! Damn I love her... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

Bill,
Was looking at the Hot Boat Site and they did a test on your boat in 2001 with the 6.2 and they stated 62.8 mph as top speed.
MikeW
What I notice with these boat shows and stuff, they never get the boating going top speed as what it could. The manufacture has a top speed that say it can do, and the show has a top speed of around 10-20 MPH less. In Bills case, it may be only a few MPH more. It also depends on what prop they have on it. They might just have your old average prop on it, which I not sure as I have never owned I/O

Mike, thanks for the info! I was told the X dimension is a little higher now, which might make up a little of that. We will just have to wait and see. I just got off the phone with Larry at Bayview. Now I have had the opportunity to meet or talk to all three in the business and whaqt a pleasure it is dealing with them. They all come across with the utmost sincerity and will do their best to make the customer happy! Thanks Bayview! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif
Maybe I should go down to the US and buy a boat off of Bayview? You got some prices on a new Pulsare with a 300X? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The Impala SS can wait...

Back when I was looking at the Pulsare, before I talked to Rick, I got a price of 35 grand with the 300. That was with a tandem axle C-hawk with all the options and the boat pretty much optioned out. I was missing about 2500 dollars on options, but still pretty loaded!
Using a calculator, thats close to 52.5 Canadian. Don't forget my gas charges (way too high with my Avalanche), all the exporting stuff and any other. I probably would not get it loaded but it would be nice enough. Nothing is cheap these days and I am learning to accept that.

Z, get a real motor in that truck and gas mileage won't drop when towing http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif I used to get 13mpg towing the Diplomat with the A/C running, 90 degrees out and the cruise set on 75.
See,you are smarter than me, you pulled out the calculator, I do it in my head quickly and look like a dumbass
Real motor? I could have got the 345 HP, but the 285 was fine with me. It could still pull a Pulsare easily and probably get over 10 MPH. Right now, I think its around 16-18 MPG driving back and fourth to work. Stop and Go really gets it down there though. Its called the Calculator button on my keyboard http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif It is simple math now isn't it? Sorry gslinger, boat is not going to make it back to green bay. Rick is leaving Ohio with it Friday morning, we are meeting in southern WI fri evening for the exchange.
Sorry...
Z, don't know what the person capacity is, don't care either. It will seat 5 comfotably. 99.999% of the timeit will be just me and my wife. Everyone I know has their own boat.
Scheduled date of delivery is Friday, March 21. I was supposed to get pics of the completed boat, but they never came through. If Chris has the time, I will send some over to him when I get home Sat.
Why not at Bayview? Put it in the showroom for people to admire, someone just like myself. Now I really can't wait to see pics!

Wouldn't it be in the showroom before you got there, say the night before? Anyways, wonder what it will look like being towed by Rick. Rick, what truck ya using? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks, workin on it JW, I was freezin when I took the pics. As soon as it warms up here in the next few days, I have to put the motor back together. I had to diconnect the hoses and pull the plugs. All of the hoses were connected and water was in the block when I got it home and unwrapped it. That was after it sat outside at the hotel the night before while getting down to almost 20 degrees! Hopefully nothing cracked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I must say, after poking and prodding my way around this morning and taking note, the fit and finish is awesome. They are still using high quality materials. Even the bolster stands and scissor hinges for the engine hatch are polished stainless. Nice touch. There are alot of little things in wiring that they did that really sets Checkmate apet that most people would never recognize. Most of the missing stuff is from the trailer and can get by with for now, the brakes I will live with I guess, the cover can be fixed, and I will buff out the boat. But... Overall, especailly compared to what else is out there and the bif factor that the boat came straight from the factory to me, no dealer prep, Mate did an awesome job. I said this before, but anyone can go buy a new boat, I thing someone who has taken alot of time to make an old Mate look awesome is more deserving than me. I think my old Diplomat derserve to be up there before the new ZT240. That Diplomat has a better finish than the new boat, for now that is, I am hard at work at buffing and polishing it to get the factories scratches out! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
Kip, took the boat on the river, please have Bill C. call me regarding this boat... You have the number!!!
Kip, disregard that last post, I will let Rick handle this!
After 6.2 hours of running, here are my numbers...54-55mph at 5200-5300 rpm with the 22 Bravo one. I have a 23 Mirage plus on the way I want to try. Those numbers are with 3/4 fuel, 4 people and calm water. I know the calm water hurts some, but as the chop grows, so should my rpm's then at that time I will be bouncing on the rev limiter. Kip, you mentioned break in oil, did you guys put oil in the fuel tank for extra lube during break in? The boat came from you to me , never made it to Green Bay for them to go over, anything I need to know? There seems to be a drive train howl through the midrange that some down here say it is normal and some say it is not. Any hints. No one here I am finding out will take the time to really help me with questions because the boat is not from around here. So... am I s.o.l or what?
Wow, if that new tach is accurate then you can pitch up!! New motor, new drive, and you're already hitting 5300!!?? What is the recommended top end for that motor? Isn't it around 4800-5000?
1995 2100BR/1995 225 Promax 2.5 EFI/10.5" RapidJack setback/23" Tempest
Wow, that's 400 rpms higher than the motors used to be. That's good, you can take advantage of a slightly smaller prop (like my Promax can). Still though, I see you have a slightly higher pitched prop on the way. That's good. Looks like you need it! Break that thing in nice and easy now! Hitting the high rpms a little early aren't we? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/sssh.gif
1995 2100BR/1995 225 Promax 2.5 EFI/10.5" RapidJack setback/23" Tempest
you have to go higher when losing a blade, (4 blade to 3 blade) Did not mean to go that high. Went up there in a heart beat and I back off of her. I only opened her up 3 times for about 20 seconds at the most, was too embarrassed after that after a Velecity 260 blew me away with only 55 more horsepower... I go as easy as I can, below 3000 rpm's it is horrible ride in flat water. With the tabs all the way down and the drive tucked, she still porpoised like mad... It finally wnated to cruise comfortably at 4000 rpm...
Here is a great shot of Bills ZT finally in the water! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I think this should be next months entrace picture! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

Let me add to my last statement, This is not a flat water boat, hence the poorer ride charicteristics at slow speed in calm water. I knew that going in, not a surprise to me. It was unusual to have calm water on the river. Although still early in the season...

Well... this time out was pretty awesome! Unfortunately the water was a shhet of glass excepth when I came upon a few barges, but the boat came alive today! I tried the 23p Mirage I have, and although the prop is too small, man what a differece. I was running 60 on both the gps and speedo at 5200 rpm at about 80% throttle. The Bravo I ran was pegged full throttle at 5300 rpm at 54-55 mph. I can't wait to get the 25 Mirage and she what she will do. I am quite amazed at the fuel consumption so far, three days out and messing around and I have only used a little over 1/4 tank. pretty damn good. I took the silencers off and put on staight tips, now she sounds like a real boat! I am still having alot of porpoising between 3000 and 3500 rpm's, but I have a feeling that will go away as the water roughin's up. I actulayy got the boat to "dance" a little today one I was able to get some air under it. For a 24 foot offshore, she has a great feeling when running her aired out at speed. I really wanted to hammer that throttle, but did not want to be too hard on a new motor, especiall since I was already at the top of the rpm range http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

Can't wait to see your boat Bill! You've got the silent choice type of exhaust right? Is it faster quiet or loud? Some have found top speed by closing the system off and running the exhaust out the prop, others find more speed going through the transom. Depends on intake tune I guess.
1995 Pulsare 2100BR/1995 Mercury Promax 225 2.5 EFI/ 1.87:1 Torquemaster/ RapidJack Heavy-Duty manual 10.5" setback/ 23" Tempest (worked for hole-shot)
JW, I have the exhaust that you can swith from open, thru transom or thru the prop. When I got the boat, it had silencers built into the tips off the back of the transom, Corsa claims it does not rob horsepower, but just quiets it down some. Way too queit for my taste. Noew I can feel the rumble at idle. That 6.2 litre small block sounds like a big block with the straight tips http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif When I was idleing through the marina yesterday, I swithced the exhaust thru the prop when I got around the docked boats, one guy yelled to me to open the exhuast back up because it sounded so good. So I did of course! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
When you've got the right prop on it and it's all broken in, I can't wait to hear the top speed comparison numbers between the different exhaust configurations..........

As of today, 25 Mirage plus, 64 mph, 5000 rpm, 3/8 tank fule, 2 people, 1 case beer plus ice, 10 hours on the hour meter so she might still losen up a bit! Rick, I was running at 175 to 180 degrees, is that normal for this motor? It felt awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know 65 is not that fast, but it still felt great for a boat this size with limited H.P. Not bad fuel economy too, 4 times out and about 10 hours of running time, finally need to fill the 75 gallon tank.
ZT 240 6.2litre/Bravo 1 320 H.P
Wow, 65 IS great for that size boat with a small block. Fantastic! It'll be really fun with a ProCharger http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I raised my jack plate today to put the propshaft 2" below the pad, and got 73 with some erratic water pressure at different speeds. Not really worth the .5 mph so I lowered it back down to 2.5" below the pad. Water pressure solid all up and down the range. Still getting 72.X out of it. Time for me to play with props now too.............
1995 Pulsare 2100BR/1995 Mercury Promax 225 2.5 EFI/ 1.87:1 Torquemaster/ RapidJack Heavy-Duty manual 10.5" setback/ 23" Tempest worked for ski duty
That is awesome JW, I think over next winter I wiull have this prop "labbed" and have a regular 25 as a spare. We have too much debris to run every weekend, so maybe run the labbed when I know it is safe. Ohhh Baby, Pro Charger.... Fot the cool factor, she throws an awesome roostertail without loosing speed, I am still trying to figure out optimum trim, my trim sender does not work for sh** so I have to do it by feel which is tough in a 3800 pound boat. Man... did it feel good! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif Also, now that I put on the 25, the porpoising is gone...!
ZT 240 6.2litre/Bravo 1 320 H.P
Is your trim sender loose? Or just erratic like it has a bad spot in the travel? The trim sender on my outboard is very repeatable, which is funny because you don't really need one with an outboard LOLOLOL
Sounds like that 25" prop has enough ear to hold that bow steady! I don't mind porpoise once in a while, I just don't like it when it can't be trimmed out. My Hydrostream Virage was like that, no matter what trim angle I set, there was a speed range where that tunnel would porpoise.
1995 Pulsare 2100BR/1995 Mercury Promax 225 2.5 EFI/ 1.87:1 Torquemaster/ RapidJack Heavy-Duty manual 10.5" setback/ 23" Tempest worked for ski duty
I check http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gifed the trim sender and tried adjusting it, what I need to to is get in and out of the boat when it is on the trailer to try to referance drive position to the guage. It seems that from the tucked all the way in position to somewhere aroung nuetral, the gauge shows nothing, then once you get the drive out some, it will start to register. Nothing that a little homework won't fix.
ZT 240 6.2litre/Bravo 1 320 H.P
I actually did that for the first time yesterday with mine. On the shorestation adjusting the jackplate height, I leveled the propshaft to the pad and then looked at my gauge. I was surprised at what parallel was, from the boat the motor looks trimmed up because of the way the deck angles down when the propshaft is parallel to the pad. My gauge could use some adjustment. I just have to decide what tick mark to put the gauge at when the propshaft is level.
When I'm trimmed out for best speed, I'm guessing the prop is actually at the pad level.

Thanks Rick, You will get an e-mail here in a minute, ignore my qustion on the temp since you just answered it. I would think the 220 could touch 70 because of the flatter bottom and less running surface. Mate has an awesome boat with the ZT's, well all of them actually!

Z, I blocked you because you got to damn pushy... I use my computer for work, I can't always answer instant messages that minute and when you come on and tell me to answer you, I had it. My computer is looged on almost all of the time, so if I don't answer I am either working or not at the computer. I know I need to practice what I preach, but patience man, some of us have more to think about than homework, my work pay all of the bills, I need to take it seriously. That pretty boat's FLAKE content about doubles when Bill jumps aboard........ http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/xxrotflmao.gif

Kip, Pictures just don't do the boat justice, it is awesome in the sun. In the 4 times I have been on the river, I think I have already recieved more compliments than all of last summer with the Diplomat. Man... does it get the stares on the road too. In my eyes, the flake really makes the colors JUMP on it in the sun!
Come on JW, you have to do more than double it!!! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

Kip, believe it or not, I did not scrub off any speed ith the rooster tail. Where the trim was set, the prop shaft was only about 2-3 degrees past horozontal, tuck the drive to horozontal and it still throws about a 3 foot high roostertail! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
ZT 240 6.2litre/Bravo 1 320 H.P
Really??? That is one HECK of a nice high X-dimension then! Where is your propshaft centerline compared to the bottom of the boat when the drive is perfectly level Bill? You may have your propshaft as high as an outboard........
1995 Pulsare 2100BR/1995 Mercury Promax 225 2.5 EFI/ 1.87:1 Torquemaster/ RapidJack Heavy-Duty manual 10.5" setback/ 23" Tempest worked for ski duty
Prop shaft is 3.5 inches below the keel. It is high enough for me to question if I need to plug some holes on the upper water intake. Considering Mate never ran my boat/engine/drive/gear ratio combo, they nailed the set-up. Preety respectable I say to 6un a "true" 64 with a small block and a stock prop.
ZT 240 6.2litre/Bravo 1 320 H.P
Well, a beautiful weekend ahead, time to go fill up the boat and the cooler with those wobbly pops. Trying another prop today, it is a Speed Zone by Turning Point. It is supposed to be faster than the Mirage+. Just be feel, seems to have thinner blades and a little less mass. I will post some numbers tonight when I get back. Thanks Kip, Mike, and Bill for help with the R&D for props! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif Not only do I get to spend the day on the river with my beautiful wife, but she has a friend in town. How many beers till the clothes come off?!?! Man... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/Eyecrazy.gif I gotta go!
2003 ZT 240 6.2litre/Bravo 320 H.P. 25P Mirage Plus
Everything was so bad about this prop with my set-up that there is nothing to say. I am not saying it is a bad prop, just not for my set-up.
2003 ZT 240 6.2litre/Bravo 320 H.P. 25P Mirage Plus
Bill, according to my Mercury prop brochure, the Revolution 4 is a 4 blade cousin to the Mirage Plus 3 blade. Be interesting for you to try one..........
I've never heard of this prop until this spring. Same diameter as the Tempest Plus/Mirage Plus wheels, but with the larger blade area of the Mirage Plus with the addition of a blade. Looks interesting, I'd like to try one on my OB
1995 Pulsare 2100BR/1995 Mercury Promax 225 2.5 EFI/ 1.87:1 Torquemaster/ RapidJack Heavy-Duty manual 10.5" setback/ 23" Tempest worked for ski duty
From the way the prop was acting today, It seemed that it did not like the higher X dimension. I actually stoppes once to see if I damaged the prop because it was ventilating at low rpm,s so much. did not want to keep the boat on plain through turns below about 3200 rpm's. It was 7 mph slower then the Mirage plus but turned 100 more rpm's. Vibrated pretty badly below 2800 rpm's with the drive tucked too. How does the Revolution compare to the Bravo that I ran?
2003 ZT 240 6.2litre/Bravo 320 H.P. 25P Mirage Plus
According to the brochure, the Bravo 1 is the top Mercury prop for big horsepower big boats in the normal consumer line. Was that prop worked? Might have been messed up by whomever worked it. Since I can play with my X dimension, I can stick to the larger diameter outboard/I-O props like the Tempest Plus, Mirage Plus, and the Revolution 4 in the consumer line. They're all 14 5/8" diameter. The Bravo 1 is 15 1/4" diameter, and Mercury says that's too big for the O/B so it's just for the big motor I/O's.
The Tempest Plus, Trophy Plus, and the Laser II are smaller blade area wheels compared to the Mirage Plus and Revolution 4, and I think that's why that family of wheel is popular with the O-B crowd. I'm thinking my Promax 2.5 won't properly spin a Mirage Plus or Revolution 4 big blade family wheel.
Getting back to your question, it could be that a Bravo 1 is too large a wheel for your big small-block. You may need to stick to the medium diameter (14 5/8") family of wheels, an
