I have nice ramp with yearly parking close by. I'm thinking of selling my Explorer, as I put 20 k miles a year and it cost a fair amount for gas. I would like to switch to a more fuel efficent car or small SUV. The ramp is a average grade and it would only be trailered about 200 feet. The weight of the boat & OB is about 1,850 pounds, and I use a signel axel trl.. Can anyone give any examples or info on what could do the job.

Thanks Again,

I used to put a heavy 18' sea ray with a ford ranger. With the weight of the boat I would think you could pull in with any small truck. V-6 or better.

I'm thinking more in line of a mid-size sedan, Rav 4, Forester,Outback, a Volvo wagon ect. It's only going to be used to pull the boat to the ramp from the parking area.

Thanks Again

Most of the samller SUV'S and mini vans have a tow rating of 2500# or better. I would think there would be no trouble at all pulling the boat around.

I've been using my 2000 Grand Am for the last couple of years, my previous boat was a Jet Boat 1200 lbs and my Checkmate is probably around the 1800 lbs mark as well. I had no problems towing my Pulse 170 from Connecticut to Toronto. The Grand Am has the 3.4 V6 but no other trailering goodies, I put a Hidden Hitch Class 2 hitch on it 3 years ago.

Todate no problems !!

I PULL AN ENTICER WITH A 4 CYL. 4X4 5 SPEED MAZDA PICK UP. THE LOAD IS AROUND 1300 LBS. THE TRUCK DOES FINE ON THE FLAT BUT REALLY WORKS TO PULL A LARGE GRADE. I SUGGEST A 6 CYL. RATHER THAN A 4 CYL. YOU MAY ALSO WANT TO LOOK AT THE GOOD AND BAD POINTS OF INDEPENDANT Vs. SOLID REAR SUSPENSION. I REALLY NEED A NEW TOW VEHICLE. WE DON'T WANT TO USE OUR MONTE CARLO SS TO PULL THE BOAT SO WE ARE THINKING ABOUT A MID SIZE SUV TO REPLACE THE 4 CYL. PICK UP TRUCK. WE ARE LOOKING AT A GMC ENVOY.

I sometimes pull my 20' enchanter with a Ford Winstar, does just fine. The launch needs to be pretty good otherwise the front wheel drive has a hard time with traction.

If you are still looking for a Good Towing SUV how about the all new Chevrolet Equinox. It is very cool. A V6 that I'm sure will pull your mate, a ton of interior room, and available All Wheel Drive. They are priced around 26,000.

Just a little note:

The Chevy Equinox transmission comes from China........... http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

Aaaa I was making a Michigan joke. There is so much that we think is American here but really isn't you could go mad thinking about it.
I have personally hauled stuff from Mexico right up here to Toledo and Detroit. to put in American cars and picked up stuff here in America and took them to places like Subaru in Indiana. So who really know where this stuff all comes from.
Don't buy Levis they aren't made here anymore either.

The Volvo XC's are nice and part owned by Ford. At least some of the profits don't stay in Europe.

The XC70 is a big wagon. The XC90 looks like a real SUV... 20MPG highway...
The RAV4 is made in the states,or is that mexico, maybe Canada ??? Were does the money go?
Subaru... Now, where is that made?.. and where does the money go?

Don't get me wrong INSX.. If I had the choice of the ones you put up I'd go for the Volvo

GM Trailblazer/Envoy, Dodge Dakota, Ford Explorer ??? So many choices.. If you want mileage in a mid-size SUV I'd go for 2WD. I personally perfer RWD for towing and something with some weight in the back. I tow with a Tahoe but, my boat's about twice as heavy as yours and the shortest distance I drive to the water is about 15 miles.

I had a Starflight with a 235 Johnson. Pulled that sucker all over from Ohio to S Carolina with a Nissan Maxima. Yes, it did cause the clutch to die at about 100K but It pulled great. You should have seen it.....looked like a shark was getting ready to eat my Maxima right up when I pulled. At least 1 1/2 times as long. LOL

Any of the chevy vehicles with the 4.3 V6 should do great. I pull my Starliner all over the place with my GMC Safari van. The Chevy/GMC small V6 trucks should do you as well. I also know the Ford Escapes pull 3600lbs and I think my wife is getting one of those used next year. They've been around a while so you should find one pretty cheap these days.

Where do you boat INXS? There seems to be a few NJ, MD, PA folks here and over at S&F with Checkmates. Maybe we can all meet up on the Delaware River or Chesapeake Bay some time. I know of at least one other Starliner and 2 other Starflites local to the Bay and River.
