How can I remove a bad paint job from the fiberglass deck on my boat? Has anybody successfully removed paint without screwing up the gelcoat finish below? I would like to restore the nice red metalflake underneath if possible. I've read about 'Marine Peel Away' and others but don't know what kind of finish it leaves afterward.
Thanks for all the great info on this site too!

I don't want to steer you wrong, but I have heard ( but not tried ) that Easy-Off oven cleaner takes off most paints, while not harming the gel coat. Maybe try it on an inconspicuous area first.

Vinny You're right about the oven cleaner, I use it to remove sign lettering from trucks, it takes the sign paint off without hurting the base finish. I'm not sure if it would take off the base paint. I have used aerosol gasket remover to strip the paint off the deck of a boat, It will lift the paint withought affecting the gel-coat. I dought you could get all of the paint out of every crack and crevis well enough to reclear and restore the original metal flake.
