Sandusky bay is located on lake Erie right between Toledo and Cleveland. Cedar Point Amusement Park is on the the bay also. And there are several Islands located 8-12 miles out that are great destinations with marinas, restruants and B & B's. It's really a boaters Paridase.
do a search on put-in-bay or kellys Island or saandusky bay or cedarpoint

Approved it with the wife and we are good to go for the trip(yaa -ha). some one post all the info on here so we can make reservations if need be. Kip i don't guess there is a chance there will be a 33 ZT or a 32 Convincor there for us to test drive? Thats about the time we are considering getting a bigger boat(hint hint)....Lets get some other members up there and have a regetta to remember....

Not sure on what motor we'll put an the 2400.....Sure there'll be bunch of different models there. We just put new upholstery in a guy from Toledo's 320 Convincor a few weeks ago he should be there. Kunkel(if he doesn't sell it before then ) will have his 100+ MPH 300 Convincor there! This is going to be a great time......plenty of hotel's ,etc in area. Also guys with smaller boats can come too.... bay is very protected from the lake even if the wind is kickin up on the main lake!

Hello fellow Checkmaters! Checkmate 98, check n out, and Kunkel Marine are in the process of organizing the 2005 Checkmate Poker Run/Regatta. We wanted to share a little information with everyone since there has been a show of interest. We are planning to hold the regatta on July 16th at the Lyman Harbor in Sandusky, Ohio. There will be a breakfast buffet on Saturday morning, lunch before the Poker Run, and dinner after the Run. Live entertainment and nightclub entrance on Saturday night will be provided by Lyman Harbor. We are currently compiling information (docking info, hotels, agenda, entry form, etc) into a packet which will be sent out upon request. We are using this forum to find out who is interested in receiving a packet of information. Poker Run/Regatta admission will be limited to 100 boats. Please respond if wanting to participate.

Sandusky Bay is OK for the smaller boats, waves are 1 ft or less. It’s well protected from Lake Erie and the wind. You can check out the bay at this site:

Sandusky Bay is in the northwest corner of Ohio.

We are going to keep the majority of the poker run in the bay. Only one leg may be run in the lake, but there will be an alternate route if necessary. We are trying to accommodate all sizes of boats so that all Checkmaters may participate in and enjoy this event. (Reminder: please e-mail us with your name and address if you interested in receiving a packet. Packets are being assembled as we speak.) Keep July 16th open for a fun-filled weekend.

Recieved my packet today. A few words here. That Lyman harbor is located just east of the cedar point causeway and the 4 hotels that are located on Cleveland Blvd. (Route-6) are less than a mile to the south. The boat ramp is located less than a mile to the east of the harbor.Everything is located very close together and there is many-many other attractions in this boaters paradise.

Guys,
Stupid question but is there any sound laws at lake erie? We do not have the luxury of Captains call on our boat.
checkmate 98
03-17-2005, 09:34 PM
Regarding the 15 foot boat: We are going to keep the poker run in the bay area, where the water is alot calmer. Remember: this is not just a poker run, it is also a regatta. We would all love to see the finished product of your hard work. Regarding the question about noise: Yes, there is a noise law in Ohio, but we are working with ODNR, the Sandusky Police, and the Coast Guard to get this lifted for the event.

AP, The closest campground would be East harbor state park.
Its Ohio largest, with 300+ eletrical sites and 200+ primative sites, 1500 ft beach on erie. Full boating capabilities in a protected harbor.Located only a few miles from lyman harbor just on the other side of marblehead point. you could put in there and come around the point and be at lymans in 5-10 minutes.just do a search for east harbor state park ohio or just ohio state parks.
P.S. I made hotel res. but might switch and do some camping myself.

Regarding the boat ramp: There is a another boat ramp on BayShore Road called Dempsey Access. It is a state dock with no ramp fee. We are hoping to talk to the City of Sandusky Boat Ramp about waving or at least lowering the ramp fee, but we can't promise anything. Regarding the lanyards: we are requiring all drivers to wear the lanyards if your boat is equipped with one. If your boat does not have a lanyard, you can still participate in the poker run. We would like to have all registrations and entry fees for the poker run/regatta in by May 28. Additional crew members can be added until June 15. Lyman Harbor is asking that we have a total number of people attending the poker run/regatta to them (for the food order) by that date. Due to food limitations, we will not be able to accept additional registrations and/or crew members past June 15.

I saw it posted that the fee for everything was about $200, just wondering what the extra $135 covers ($65 for the land activities). I am bringing my boat so I know I want to hang with everyone in the water, but I've neve been involved in a Poker Run so not sure I'll be participating in that. Thanks in advance,

And other's have asked if they send their registration in can they pay at a later date..? Just thought i'd ask ? Just so much lead time ahead of when it's accually happening. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Herb, I think for just land activities it is $65 PER PERSON and for everything it is $200 for two people.

Wanted to give a clarification between the two prices for the poker run/regatta. The $195 price is for two people, two T-shirts, two complete meal tickets, one poker run hand, free entertainment, and numerous "freebies" that will be given away. (Some of the extra money will be tied into poker run purse.) The $65 price is for one person, one T-shirt, one complete meal ticket, and free entertainment.
Mooneys: Your packet will be in the mail first thing tomorrow. We are sorry for the delay!

Regarding the deadline for registrations and payment: Registrations can be sent in ahead of time but money and final registrations must be received by June 15. Lyman Harbor is requiring a food count at least four weeks prior to the event. We also have to give a final count to the company who is developing the T-shirts. Unfortunately due to these requirements, we cannot take any registrations after this date. If anyone shows up the day of the event, due to food and entertainment restraints we will not be able to accommodate you.

Ok folks I think I may be a little thick on this Regatta/Poker Run thing so any advice would be appreciated.
I received my packet today, THANKS!, but I'm still a bit confused. For the most part I'm use to heading out to get togethers like this and boating up to a sand bar and hanging out with other boaters/familys/friends for the day with a few runs during the day. We usually hang out in one spot on the water for most of the day tied up to other boats, one big party.
If My wife and I attend we will be joined by our 2 year daughter. I may be wrong, but I'm thinking the Poker Run may be out of the question with a 2 year old as well as the night club. My question is if we pay the land activities fee for 2 people (assuming my 2 year old is free, right?) will we be excluded from hanging out on the water with the other Checkmate boats and folks? Will anyone actually be hanging out on the water or will all activities be mostly landlocked (boats docked) except for the Poker Run?
If someone can help with some advice I'd really appreciate it, and sorry for the newbie confusion.
BYW - we're river and coastal bay boaters. This inland big lake thing is new to use so thanks in advance for the help.

Mooneys Just a reminder a poker-run is not a race. We will just make 5 card stops on the water. If you pay 65 for you and 65 for your wife your daughter will be free. No you will not be excluded from water or land activities. The only thing you will not recive is a poker hand.

Wow, just read through 6 pages of post.
Sounds like a fun outting. And since I live on the Bay just West of Lymans and keep my 25 Convicor on a lift in the Bay, I think I'll have to join in.
I was wondering where the stops were going to be? I can't imagine 5 decent stops on the Bay.... unless they are marinas. I can only think of 3, maybe 4 bar/restaurants.
Also, I wanted to share a 'little' advice and history of the water conditions with some out-of-state guest. Please don't think the Bay only gets a 1 foot chop at max. I lived on that water for about 15 years, when that wind blows a typical, and normal summer breeze, West-Southwest at 15 or so... that Bay gets rough and choppy. It will be a tough, wet ride for some smaller boats. But, if the wind is nice, it can be a sheet of glass.
I requested my packet and look forward to seeing a ton of mates cruising around in the front yard! I think I can manage to make the boat ride over to the marina.
If you need a "card stop" for the day, I got a 35 foot dock out front and I can have someone handing out cards and maybe taking pics....

Ok, we sent our registration and check by mail today - Monday June 6th. I hope it isn't to late.
We are also staying at the Quality Inn arriving Friday morning and leaving Sunday. We will probably do the water park thing Friday afternoon so My 2 year old has some kid oriented fun, so will have to miss the Checkmate tour and Coops BBQ :-( We'll catch up with everyone on Sat.
I really had to twist the wifes arm to do this trip since she doesn't see the attraction of Ohio when the beach is in the totally other direction in Deleware. We also had a very bad experience at a Hotboat.com get together on the Chesapeake Bay. Very unfriendly and a good bit unorganized. No food and everyone passed us buy since we were in an "egg beater boat" & very clicky folks with no time for newbies. I hope I don't kill all future boating excursions with this trip. Are the Checkmate folks friendlier then the Hotboat folks? Will there be a "help the wives fit in and have fun" theme in some way? She just wants to feel welcomed and less boat chat since that is usually all that gets talked about, besides who's is bigger ;-)
I'm sure I'm going to have a ball and from the sounds of the activiies the wife should to, but that Hotboat thing is a bad reminder so I need to make sure we make the best of the event or my overnight boating trips will be a thing of the past.
Any advice is welcome, so please help me make a boating G2G fan out of my wife.

My wife and I are registered. This will be our first orrganized boating event so like you I want to make sure the wife has a good time. If you are looking for someone to make your wife feel welcome, head over to the boat with "Gangbusters" on the side. My wife Linda, is very outgoing and could care less about talking boating.

Don't think I'm going to have the $$ to ohhfisshally attend your event but may try and park near by and walk through to ogle the gorgeous boats y'all have.
I know those waters fairly well also.
The Bay can get very snotty based on wind (already posted) and also wakes from multiple directions.
I have done it all many, many times in a 13' Whaler though (wearing a swim suit).
There is a beautifull beach/penninsula at the mouth of the bay which is a mile or two from where y'all will be and is a very popular local hang out.(but does get rough due to boat traffic)
For the smaller guys, head under the Cedar Point causeway bridge which is maybe a 1/2 mile from where you'll be.
Once under that bridge if you head North towards the end of the water way you should get nice water. It is fairly shallow (3' - 4') which keeps most pigs out.
There are some amazing house back in some of the canals you'll see and the ladies should enjoy that.
Off that same water way is another marked channel leading back to a McDonalds on the water with docks (for the kids) and a T.G.I. Fridays with docks. All no wake and protected.
There is a "Water Park" walking distance from where you'll be also.
Cedar Point amusement park is straight across the bay (a mile) and has one of the nicest fully functional marinas on the lakes.
I would say, come early, stay late and bring the whole family!!
Plenty to do for everyone.
Could easily see a few of you guys boating to Ceadr Poitn and turning the kids loose in the park while Dad and Mom enjoy the company on the boats.
Plenty to do within a short boat or trailer or car trip from where you'll be.

How protected is the water for this run. We’ve done other runs, and with the size of our ‘Mate, we don’t want to get beat up on the run.

Does our fee take care of the following:
Saturday
8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Breakfast
12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Lunch/Lyman Harbor
5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Dinner
Any drinks included ;-)
I also see a Friday night 6:00-9:00 at Cabana Jacks. Is Cabana Jacks kid friendly early in the evening and do they serve a good dinner?
Same question for Saturday at Coco Beanos 7-10, kid friendly early in the night? We would love to be kidless and party into the night with you all, but this is such a cool event we couldn't leave her behind. She will grow up on a good steady diet of Checkmates ;-) and will probably out-party us someday, LOL.
I second and third the question on number of boats at this point... please?

The $195 entry fee does include a lite breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As for Cabana Jacks, it is a nightclub that has excellent food. It is kid-friendly early in the evening but when the band starts (10:00 p.m.), it does get busy. Coco Beanos is a live band that is scheduled to be at Lyman Harbor Saturday evening. We are receiving registrations daily so we will not know a boat count until the day of the event. I wouldn't worry about the weather yet. The prediction are wrong more then they are right.
2 weeks ago, they were calling for T-Storms all weekend, not a single drop fell. It was a great weekend too. No wind, hot, etc.
The Sandusky Bay area is pretty neat, it seems to get missed by many storms and the bad weather. Sandusky, Toledo, Cleveland get all the bad stuff.
I'm probably jinxing things... I hope not.

"The remnants of Dennis are expected to stall near the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys; some spots in the lower Midwest could see in excess of 10 or 12 inches of rain over the next several days."
They say it may loop around and stall right over the Ohio Valley.
If I lived within a couple of hours that would work, but with the cost of the Regatta, hotel, and the posibility of being cooped up in a hotel room with my wife and bored 2 year old things won't work for us. I may have to eat my registration fees and stay home if things at the weather.com site don't look better by tomorrow (my last day to cancel the hotel room without a charge)

I spoke with Jon from Kunkels this morning and got my seat. I asked the route and he told me where we're heading.
The race is going to run right past my dock! So, I'll try to have some family member hang out on the dock in the morning to take some shots of the race. Should be a neat sight to have 30 Mates cruise by the house. I'll post them on my server next week.
Weather is looking decent too. mild South winds at 9 and slight chance of rain. (too early to trust though)

I've never done any boating in this bay before, or Ohio for that matter. What's the story on alcoholic beverages? Is BYOB allowed at Lyman Harbor? Is there a place to buy alcohol local to the event or should I plan on bringing it along with me from PA?
the sMac
07-13-2005, 07:26 PM
aahhh, a man with his priorities right! My kind of thinking.
You are allowed to have 'booze on-board" and as long as the Captain isn't legally intoxicated, you are okay. That's the answer I was given from the ODNR during the winter Boat Show. Our legal limit is .10
There's plenty of places to purchase alcohol, but it might be a little easier to BYOB. And I don't know how Lyman is, but I would bet that you can BYOB there also. It would make the post-race more fun.
Hope that helps.

BYOB is fine , but cannot leave your boat.Captain must remain sober for event. Legal limit is now .08 . Lyman has extended the happy hour for our group. They have two beer trucks on the lawn plus mixed drinks inside during the
concert which ends at 11http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gifm. Any still standing will adjorn to the insde bar.

SWAP MEET at the Regatta...
I am bringing my old manual Springfield Marine "MAX FORCE" 5.5" jackplate in case someone wants it. I upgraded to 12" of Hydraulic jackplate so I don't need this anymore. Make me an offer I'm sure it won't be refused or bring something boat oriented to trade ;-) Cash would be better so I can spend it at Kunkel's http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Where do I start...
Stacey really enjoyed herself and made many comments about how "these Checkmate folks are much nicer and friendlier then those Hotboat folks". She had a great time and felt very welcomed by everyone. The Kunkel's folks even stopped to say goodby when they saw us in the parking lot at Breakfast this morning. What a great group of people. Stacey is already looking over hotel info we collected at breakfast this morning so SHE is ready to book when a date is set for next year http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/xxrotflmao.gif
Obviously Mya feels the same way. You would have thought she was the forum member here and not me with the way everyone welcomed her, and she was wearing and tripping over her new Checkmate jacket the minute I unpacked it tonight. Thanks to the organizers for the wonderful gesture. She won't stop saying "that's my jacket Daddy" when I pick it up and consider trying it on. http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/sssh.gif
Best boating vacation ever. A little to short for such a long drive (right Big Dave), so lets do at least a whole weekend next year, and we may even make a week out of it for the family vacation. Imagine that... going West to Ohio instead of East to the Beach for vacation, go figure http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/eyes.gif
Best boating vacation in bad weather (glad we came and didn't bail because of weather, that'll teach me)
Best group of people I've ever met boating, and not only will we be there next year, we hope to see some of you again this year if a last minute event can be set up "have boat, tow vehicle, and trailer, will travel" http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/bounce.gif
We think, especially Mya, that Checkmate and Kunkel's did an AWESOME job, so much so I had my post vacation depression face on all the way back to little old Dillsburg, PA http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I wanted to lay on the floor and throw a temper tantrum "NO I DON"T WANT TO GO HOME" but Mya had that covered. I want to thank Bill, Kip, and Mike for the hospitality Friday. We ended up spending almost all day at the Checkmate factory and had a great time. All in all the weekend was the most fun we've ever had in a boating related event. Already planning on staying through Sunday next year.

CNC Wizard,
Yes, I had the new prop on. It was slower at WOT but cruised better, handled better, etc.
The Revolution 4, 14 5/8" x 21" pitch turned a max 4500 at WOT and only 51 mph.
I just can't grasp the fact that the boat can only do 51 mph (GPS) now with a L29, 454 MPI. I use to be in the 60's with the old 330 engine.
Did the Kunkels clan give you any advice you can pass along to me??
And yes, Kip was really nice when I spoke with him after the event too. I left the marina and had to come back to look for my glasses at the bar (drinking, it makes you forget things) and he and a few other were complimenting my old boat
It felt good to have some compleiment made by the man who built the vessel.

The information the Kunkles gave was great but it pretty much pertained to the boat I was with. I do know/find out that the ignition on some of these mercruiser engines have a set limiter for rpm, in our case it is 4600 but were gonna change that.
I remember buying two guys a beer @ the bar sat evening, I know one of them was one of the Kunckle guys was the other one you?? Only if I was better with names

You made the trip to Put-In-Bay in the Starflite? I'm impressed, some of the bigger boats were a little leary of that trip into the Lake. Sorry we didn't get to chat. I wanted to chat with you about your boat since we had similar boats (yours is obviously a good bit nicer and faster). Maybe we can chat by phone sometime. I'm trying to figure out what to repower mine with this fall and the 245 was an option as is the 260 and maybe even the Promax 300. What is your setup and what numbers are you seeing with the 245? WITCH WOULD ELIMINATE THE SMALLER BOATS AND BE MORE OPEN TO THE WEATHER.BUT I FEEL THEY NEED SOME CHANGES. I DIDN'T KNOW THAT THE BAY WAS SO INDUSTRIAL AND UNATTRACTIVE
MAYBE A CARD POINT OUT AND AROUND THE POINT IN FRONT OF CEDARPOINT AND ANOTHER AT KELLYS ISLAND MARINA.I UNDERSTAND A RUN OUT TO PUT-IN-BAY WOULD BE TO HARD BUT MAYBE AN ORGANIZED TRIP FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO GO.MAYBE ANOTHER CARDPOINT COULD BE OUT AROUND CATAWBA ISLAND INTO PORT CLINTON AREA. A STOP FOR FUEL OR A REST BIT. BUT ANYWAY I WON'T BE ABLE TO ATTEND UNTIL I PURCHASE A LARGER CHECKMATE IF THEY CHOOSE TO EXPAND THE RUN AND REALLY USE THE WHOLE AREA.

I also hope that a 2nd annual Checkmate Poker Run is being planned, we had a blast. I felt that the run could have been a little longer, but in no way am I complaining. I understand why the route was chosen, to give all Checkmate owners the opportunity to participate in this event. I thought that the run was well laid out. Had the weather been a little nicer, perhaps the smaller boats would not have been “beaten up” so badly.
Maybe this year, two routes could be laid out. One route for the bigger boats and another route for the smaller boats. I’ve done Poker runs in the past where all the boats ended up at the same places, but the smaller boats took a different route, closer to the shoreline, where the traffic and waves weren’t as bad. I’m not sure if this is possible, seeing that I’m not from this area, but maybe it’s something that can be looked into.
One thing is for sure, we’re already looking forward to attending this event in 2006. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/thumb.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/thumb.gif
