I just replaced the gimble bearing on a mercruser alpha one.the out drive came off a little hard but not bad.the motor and complete drive was overhauled less than 30 hours ago.when i look though the shaft hole the splines look tilted up slightly like the motor angle is off and i cant get the outdrive to go in the last inch or so.i cant figure out if the orings wont slide pst the bearing race or the motor is missalinged.how do i check the alingment?any other ideas? thanks guy's http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/eyes.gif

Have you tried spinning the shaft alittle to get the splines lined up?It's alot easier if you have someone inside moving it slightly while your pushing it on.Thats how it worked for me on a bravo 1.Hope that helps.
There is an alignment tool that is basically a splined shaft that slides in and out to make check alignment. If it hangs up, the motor should be adjusted, that is done with adjustment "screws" on the motor mounts. It is a pretty simple job if you have easy access to the mounts both with tools and the eye.

Bill is right on this one. Merc. sells an alignment tool. You can find them for sale at reasonable prices on E-Bay.. Or you can make one if you have a spare input yolk from a drive. In any case, YOU MUST get the alignment correct before pushing the drive on. If you force it on, you will burn up the upper bearings, the coupler, and the gimbal bearing again....

Another thing you might check, Make sure the shift shaft is straight and is lined up with the bellhousing shaft groove. With Lower unit and lever locked into forward gear.Just finished doing bellows and gimble bearing on my boat. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif Whole lot of fun
