I have a 99 240zt with 38 hours on it running a 7.4 with 23 3 blade ss. I have talked with Checkmate they say I sould see about 4800 RPM's and 67-69 on speedo, I see about 4400 RPM's and 60-63 on speedo. Do these speeds and RPM's seem correct and what can I do need more speed

Bill should be able to help you with this as well. He is soon to be getting his brand new ZT 240 and he should know a think or too.. What they expect for ya Bill? Anyways, has the hull changed in the last 3-4 years enough to make that much difference?

Mike, you did not say which prop you have or which motor you have and the condition of you prop ect... There are many variables that can hurt your performance. When was the last time you changed you water/fuel seperator, has you motor/drive been checked for alignment, is your bottom clean, do you have a hook, has this been going on since new ect...

Mike;
That motor should be able to twist that prop to 4800 rpm. The fact that you can only get 4400 out of it says that there is a problem. To add a few things to what Bill already said:
1-Try another prop, maybe this one is damaged.
2-Engine may be down on power, IE: check fuel pressure, plugs, cap and rotor, stored codes in the ecu ( I am assuming it is an EFI motor since it is a '99),timing, make sure you throttle cable is adjusted properly to get wide open throttle.
I have to ask you a stupid question: Are you sure you are setting the trim and tabs for maximum speed?
In case you are intersted here is the formula for calculating approximate speed. ((pitch x r.p.m)/drive gear ratio)/1056 then minus your slip %
Using your numbers and assuming a 1.5 drive ratio it works out to about 59.5 actual speed. I am guessing a 7% slip factor would be about right.
Sorry, I just noticed the motor is the MPI, but is it the Mag and is the prop a Mirage plus and has it been rebuilt. Vinny is right, if it is in the motor, the dealer should be able to just plug it in to the computer to tell you, but as you can tell, there are so many variable, I can't even remember as I type to make sure we get them all. That sounds like a situation where you take a tech out for a ride with you. Also like Vinny suggested, I have seen people who never trim their boat out and can't figure out why it won't get up to speed. Mate told me that I will see 65 GPS, 70 speedo, with a 6.2 320hp/bravo1 and 23p mirage plus on my 240 when it comes and that motor is rated for 5200 rpm's

The prop is new not a spot on it (Mirage plus) from merc box on to shaft and yes it was trimed out proper, boat is like new never left in the water and its cleaner than show room. The motor is a 7.4 not a mag. I got this boat as a repo never went in the water until last year. When I got it had 1.2 hours on it now has 38 or so. The motor sounds real good it comes out of the hole hard but up on plane it runs and sounds good but this thing did sit for 3 years. What do you think this boat is worth I may say what I gave for it but I don't want anyone to cry http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

I have tried to put pics in to show not finding the way to do so, help!!!!
For the images things, in order to post them by yourself, they have to be already on a website. You then right click the image, then properties. Copy the image URL and then here, where you see the photo button, paste the URL here and voila! If they are not on a site, Chris can always get them up...

You should not be having a herd time getting on plane, try another 23 Mirage plus, you might have on that is mismarked. I I had on of those once. I tried everything, then finally changed the prop and bingo.
I forgot again, has this been going on since you got the boat? It is hard to say what it is worth, you need to tell us he option, trailer, ect...

You have to check out the motor. Check what I posted, it will give you a start on what to look for. If those tests yield no problems, the next thing I would do is a leak down check. Being that the motor sat for a long time, it is possible that the cylinders rusted up a bit. When the motor was fired up, it may have worn the rings enough to cause a loss of cylinder pressure. A leak down test will tell you for sure.
That boat probably sold for close to 50 in 99. I don,t have the book to tell you what it is worth now. I still recommend trying a prop first, it would be free. If that does not work, do what Vinny said, but that will probably cost you at least 100.00 bucks. I like the free stuff first.

Here is no images. I think one of use should run a course on how use this place. I'd love to see it though but I bet half of the people here don't know where the PM's are... Anyways, give us the URL for the site where they are... Thanks...

http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif I ran a blue book on your 1999 ZT-240 this morning. This is without options, just the mag and trailer. Retail on the boat new was $46,069, add canvas, gaffrigs, silent choice or corsa, etc.. make that in addtion to... retail on the boat today is $29,998, wholesale between $21,431 and $24,730...Blue books are also average condition books, anything exceptional, low hours, tons of options, etc, we typically will add 10%-25% depending on the boat. I probably should mention my prices are in U.S. dollars. Rick

Big difference there.... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Now if the Pulsare prices were like that in CAD, I'd be going down to Bayview Marine right now...

Z, when you do the math, the price comes out to be about the same weather it be CAD or the US dollar. For years, it has been cheaper for us to come up to Canada and buy. When I lived out in Seattle, we would go up to Canada a couple of times a month for a long weekeknd to party and shop because it was so much cheaper.

Update on the 7.4 found that the Hyd. Cyl. was riding on the top of the distibuter. Looking at the motor as it was running for the 1st start up this year as I some how put my hand on the distibuter I had a jolt http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/Eyecrazy.gif(+#@*#&) I said.
So I put new wires on and then went to change the plugs and found that all the plugs were not tite one or 2 threds from contact with the head. The cap and rotor were also bad, lets just say it sounds sweet now http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/lol.gif. I have to give a big THANKS to Mike Combs @ Checkmate. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/bounce.gif
