I'm buying a Corsa Captain's Call diverter setup and am having a hard time deciding whether to go with silencers or not (ASRs? I have a set of ASR 5.5 silencers - which may be too big?), and whether I should go out the back or out the side? If I go out the back, I'll need to make an S turn with the pipe to avoid the power steering. What do you think?

1986 Ambassador 350 (+.040, balanced, cam, intake, mild porting) ~300HP.

If it were mine i'd go out the side it looks tuff. and you get less cabin noise as it splits up the sound waves instead of combining them.
just my 2 cents http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I recently rigged up a Rinker 206 Captiva with captains call from Corsa. It is a great system. I also used a side exiting exhaust. Looked great when it was done. The only thing I didn't like is that if you stood to the side with the engine running, it sounded like a 4 cylinder. I feel that it really needed a balance pipe to get the better sound. However, I don't think that the lack of the balance pipe hurt performance at all. In that particular boat, there seemed no alternative but to exit from the sides. There is a molded in swim platform off the back. Exiting below didn't seem practical, exiting above would have made a mess of the platform. So, we opted for side exits.

If the boat was parked at a dock though, you'd have exhaust pumping right out where you would normally be getting in the boat wouldn't you?

Yes you would. But it is not a factor. There is no difference in boarding from the stern of a docked boat with thru transom exhaust and boarding a boat from port or starboard with a side exit exhaust. Still has the same water and gases.

I saw a SeaRay with side exit corsa last weekend that pulled into the restaurant and at first I thought he had a 4 or 6. I asked him about his exhaust and he said he had it shut off, but you still get a little sound. Kind of sounded "tinny" and like it was a lopey 4-cylinder. I'd guess it'd sound better opened up. The guy really talked it up. He loves his setup. He said to be VERY careful when you cut the holes though. Sounded it may have been due to a personal experience... I think a balance tube would be a good idea, but I think it'll be hard with the side setup. There was a Crownline that had side-exit corsas from the factory that was down at Cove Palisades when we were there. That thing sounded pretty good, but once he pulled away from the beach and took off, it wasn't as loud (side vs rear). I think he had mufflers also. I really don't want mufflers, but I also don't want a ticket. One buddy just said, "well, if you see a cop, turn the diverters off!" I guess that might work...

As far as a ticket for noise goes, you would have to check what your area regulations are. Most likely, there is a limitation as to the # of decibels allowed. But, providing you have some sort of switchable system on, you should be ok. Just so you have another option, Teague Marine makes a great switchable exhaust tip. You can go straight out the back and just use their tip. I use them on mine, the motor is almost silent when they are on. There is no restriction at all when they are open. I think they get about $900 for a pair.
