i have an 83 eluder which is brown metalflake and the clear is completely burnt from the top. the sides and bottom are perfect though. i am wondering if i can just clear this. also if i can even sand this as the metalflake is the only think left. i`d hate to ruin it completely. i`m not looking for perfect just an improvement. thx in advance

It can be cleared. With the right prep work & a good quality paint,it'll look great.I had a 17' Diplomat with the same proplem.I wet sanded it,buffed it out.It looked much better but really needed clearing.

I cleared one last winter, turned out great. you have to sand it untill you get a good smooth surface, but be very carefull not to go too deep. I used a high quality DUPONT clear, no primers or sealers, they will dull the final shine.
It will look like new when your done, but it will cost you a lot of elbow grease.

If a person can't paint really well would you suggest having it clear coated by a automotive painter or go to a shop that specializes on boats.I have painted a few cars but I don't believe I would want to tackle the deck of my boat.I may try to wet sand it with very, very, very fine wet/dry paper and see how that turns out.I did a very small spot in the rear of the boat and it did make a big improvement.
