im new to this forumn, but ive owned a 1972 checkmate, 18 ft. jet, boat for about 10 years. my question is, im getting a water leak around my intake grate. i have a berkely pump and there is a small gap around the pump grate, also the back of the grate is higher, on the corners, than the hull. i tried steel horse puddy, and it worked for about 6-8 times out on the river. but now it has blown out. ive thought of re-using the puddy and making some metel plates to screw into the grate to trap the puddy so it cant be blasted out. is there something better i can use. by the way, my checkmate is a 18 ft. jet, with a built 460. thanks

Welcome to the board. I do belive yo are the 1st checkmate jetboat. Very cool. With your water leak, is it the gap or the flax that is causing the fil to blow out. If its the gap then you need to repair the gap. I would remove the grate and bult the area up with quality fiberglass and blend into the hull. This would give the grate a solid mounting foundation and with it blended into the hull the water would not be able to blow it out.

thanks for the welcome. cool being the first checkmate jet boat. the problem is that the rear of the rear corners of the intake grate are recessed up so there is a lip of the hull that hangs down a little less than a 1/4 inch on each side. the pressure of the water blows out anything ive packed in there. the steel horse puddy lasted the longest. i need to find something that will bond like a weld to metal. i thought about packing it again and bolting a plate over it to the grate, kinda like sandwiching it in between.
