I use Series 2000 AMSoilSeries oil, its on the expensive side but so is a new drive. 70 dollars a quart, used by most offshore teams

Green Death! My Mate is the first Merc. powered boat I have owned. Other 2 were OMC Cobra http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/sick.gif and I used factory lube in the case. How is or who told you Merc gear oil was bad? I would like to know what to run also seeing as I have, I believe, the original Alpha 1 drive on my '86. If it did blow, would a Gen. 2 Alpha slide in? Or possibly a Bravo drive?

No,You'll have to stick with your current model Alpha. They're a great unit and shouldn't give any trouble. In my opinion you'll be fine with the Merc lube unless your running under extreme conditions.Like a high horsepower engine ,etc.I do suggest installing a drive shower. They're about $80. and really keep the upper drive cool. http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I just got done installing the Simrek Super Summit on my new Alpha outdrive. The owner of the drive shower company said the best thing I could do for my drive (besides his drive shower http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) was to switch away from the Mercury lube (green death) after the warranty runs out to a full synthetic outdrive oil.
I agree that the green stuff is probably good enough for years of use, but I use this rig for pulling tubes for hours on end and the drive does heat up. It's probably worth the extra cost to use a better oil.

Power Boat magazine recommended Ams Oil in there last article on servicing Merc outdrives, Next oil change I might switch over. Anyone have any info for outboard gear oil?

I know this has nothing to do with boating but, AMSOIL had a bad batch of oil two snowmobiling seasons ago and everyone was cooking their sleds. I work part time at a sled shop and know this as a fact. Was part of this "batch" in with the drive oil?? No one knows for sure. The only thing I do know is we sell WAY MORE oil for two strokes in the winter than gear oil in the summer. Not dogging AMS but I never had a problem running Factory oil in sled. I believe that once you switch, you are screwed. This year alone, my sled blew up 3 times!! Why. I believe because I SWITCHED OIL. Never had a problem untill this year. http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/zx11pissed.gif Like I said, no connection to boat drives but.....you never know.

Enforser24,
Did you have A problem with fall out (clumping of the oil).I sold some to some friends who said they saw that when pouring in to there tanks. No engine probs though. As far as the merc stuff goes I had about 400 +hp small block with A alpha drive for 3 years with no problems And have used it in the newer boat (less hp)to with no problems(knock on wood) http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Not sure what the customers were expierencing with their sleds. Just knew a lot of them were first year and long time users of AMSOIL. Sleds went ka-boom. I have heard nothing bad about AMS for outdrives...yet. Any one in here use anything BESIDES AMS or MERC GD? Would like to know.

Bob,
Jason at Performance Marine actually said to run Merc's best stuff.I think they have two types.A premium and a High Performance lube.Do you know which one he was referring too?I would assume its the high Perf. stuff.
