engine runs but not going forward

I'm haveing problem w/ my engine. It starts, but when put into gear does not go. Prop spins but boat remains still. Can anyone tell me what could be the problem w/ my boat? Thanks- http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Can you be a little more specific. What motor? You say that the prop spins, but the boat doesn't move. Does the engine rev up freely as if it was in neutral?

Vinny is right, we need more info, the only way the boat will not move if the prop is spinning is if the boat is still tied up. Please... shed a little more info so we can help.

Thanks for answering but the boat is not tied to anything and still it doesn't go forward when pushed forward nor back-ward as though the gear is not working. Let me go a little back as to how it started out to how it is now. First of all-before the boat stop working-the boat would go forward when put into gear but there would be a choking/jump as the boat goes and the engine would not go faster than 15 mph...so I htought it needed a new gas diaphram-replaced it but still same thing=choking/jumping...then it gave up on me and wouldn't go anywhere, I notice the prop spins if go into gear but the boat remains still. Would the water-pump/impeller have anything to do with this or do U think its the prop gears are loose?

Is it an outboard or inboard? Is it Merc or Omc? What h.p. is it? Have you heard grinding sounds from the unit when you put it in gear?Take the boat out of the water and put in gear(not running) see what the prop does when you spin each direction and let us know. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/eyes.gif

What type of maintenance has been done to Engine, drive, coupler, alignment, ect??? What kind of RPM's were you turning when you would not go more than 15 MPH? Shift cable or throttle cable bad? Salt water boat?
