Thanks in advance,

I have a 1985 diplomat with a 205HP/4BRl carb.
I just put in new plugs, cap, rotor and cleaned the fuel filter. it stalls when i put it in gear 50% of the time, it i difficult to get on the trailer on the boat ramp. The idle is set to 800rpm.
Otherwise it runs great, no hesitation when i give it full throttle and it never skips or hesitates thru the entire rpm range.
The choke works correctly I check it today. I believe it a carb issue but I don't want to mess up what works good with it.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

P.S. I will post pic's soon, I just wet sanded and polished it, WOW it looks great thanks to the info on this site. Thanks again

Francis

Check your shift interupt set up. The shift plate is mounted on the engine it has little micro switch that stumbles the engine to let you get in and out of gear. If that is out of adjustment it will stumble too long and stall the engine. Your shift cable (drive end) has problably stretched and is coming out of adjustment.

Thanks Chris,
The shift interupt switch is bad ,the local dealer mentioned a service bulletin and the new part is a "shift plate" p/n 864363A1.
Has anyone used this new part?.

The bulletin involes the end of production for the switch in your engine. Probably, cuz the supplier couldn't supply that type of switch anymore - who knows! They replaced it with a new plate assy. Canadian it's around the $150 range. The switch itself is worth about $30. Pain in the rear but that's merc for ya. Just had to put one of those shift plates on a customers boat.
