I am the proud owner of an 87'Senator. The steering box behind my dash seems to be worn out. The steering wheel has very little play from side to side, but has a lot of play in and out. Does anyone know part #'s or cost of this item? Also the previous owner put on a steering cable that is way too long. Anyone know the correct length for my boat?

if you want to do it yourself:
Measure down the center from the tip of the bow to the transom

If you mean the steering cable. I sure someone here knows or you could call Mike Combs at Checkmate. 419-562-3881 He may be able to tell you. You may be able to get one from them also.

Hi Senator:
Steering cable and helm replacement? - Fun job! Anyway, Check the front or back end of the cable - Teleflex usually prints the part number on that area. You're primarly interested in the 3 digit number that divides by 12 (144/12= 12ft cable). Of course, you'll want a shorter length but that gives you a starting point.
If the cable is grey, then it is probably a merc cable system. You must replace the cable with the same type of helm - merc cable, merc helm etc. Teleflex does make some adaptors they also make cable and helm set if you want. Remove the old cable and take it to your local marina, they will no (if they're any good anyway) by looking at it, who made the cable. A word of caution though - cable re and re isn't hard but make sure you test throughly at low speed before the 60 mph blast!
As far as the helm goes, you'll be lucky to find any identifying marks, best bet take it out take it to the marina and compare to the pictures in the books.

Hey senator if you give me you're email address I can send you the guide for measuring cable length strait from teleflex. but basicly you measure from the helm to the side and from that point to the transom and from that point to the motor.Or you can buy the extra hydraulic steering system I have .Sorry had to get that in there I need to move it before the wife kills me.LOL

I replaced mine on the Enforcer last year.Made a huge difference. Best price and service I found was at go2marine.com.I think it was about $160. for the assembly. You diffinetly have to have the correct length.

Didn't find any markings on mine (89 Senator) , there is an adjustment nut on the back of the steering box that adj. the in and out of the steering wheel ,also there is a hidden grease zert on top . If you need cable length , let me know , I'll measure mine .
