Well I am finally going to break into this project, I hope I am able to accomplish my goals of having a super cool rocket of a, what seems to me as a very rare checkmate. I want to be able to hit the 55-70mph range(if at all possible). I plan on hanging either a 3 cyl OMC or a inline 6 merc, hopefully can get my hands on a short shaft model.
I will get the HIN numbers and some good pix tomorrow. The boat needs a recore, stringer system, interior, maybe a transom, massive bottom work (filling, sharpening of everything)(maybe a pad??), engine and rigging. Ive got 2 50 hp mercs but they are beat and I doubt I could achieve a single running motor from the 2 but that is an option as well.
I am thinking of covering the splashwell and maybe fabricating a rear hatch but am unsure on those mods and the pad, I dont know if I want to keep the boat original or if I want to update it with new ideas...
Lets pray for consistent motivation and my ability to do the task at hand haha

I sent chris some pix of my shipwreck of an ancient mate (pun intended). Maybe coop or kip will know a little something about these boats, it is in very rough shape but I have confidence that it will look new sometime soon hopefully.
I wonder though, exactly how rare these boats really are... the 60s V- series V131 or 141 is what I assume I have

It looks to be a V-161 or similar model.
Here is an old '68 brochure shot. Enjoy. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I would keep the boat original they seem to be hard to find.
Nice work on removing the balsa core. That kind of damage scares most people off. Not me.

it is in very rough shape, but tomorrow I am going to be constructing a cradle for the bottom, in the years before now when I began to disassemble I was unaware of cores and how thin hulls are so being in and out of it on the trailer http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif the bottom is WEAK and has a few cracks, but I have faith and this mate will definitely see the water again, it will probably be a long road but just wanted to report some good findings, the deck core for the bow appears to be A+ solid fiberglassed plywood, the transom is probably wet, I will be separating the deck from the hull as soon as it is properly supported
pix and progress to come, oh and the 150 hp MAX is for the V-161, I am not sure if this is considered the V-141 or if there was a V-131??? it measures in at 13' 1"
The HIN is not marked on the transom and I had a beat up plate 2 years ago that I misplaced, but I dont think it was readable...
Can I look anywhere else on this hull for some ID??

http://www.checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/thumb.gif Way cool classic. Keep the pics flowing as you work on her.
pre-1972 hull did not require, or usually have HIN's, so you probably will not find one anywhere. I have a V-141, it measures exactly 14'. My hull is identical to the V-161 you see in the brochure picture. My deck goes right to the floor on the inside and is all glassed as one. Your dash kick up also doesn't seem to be as agressive. I would think that your boat is early to mid 60's V-131?
