I have directed this question to Kip but ofcourse anyone else who may have information, please post a reply.
Next winter I am planning on adding a Whipple Charger to my 454 Magnum MPI. It will be estimated to produce about 600-650 h.p. Being that I am not one of the unlimited budget guys and I am also a believer in that you have to be able to safely put the horsepower to the water before you build the horsepower, I have decided to upgrade my drive this season. This will also allow me to split up the expense this modification will cost me. I have full hydraulic steering, Dana Performance tabs, the only thing missing from having all solid parts hanging off the back is the correct drive.
I am looking at getting a Bravo 1 XR. I can't see spending the extra $$$ for an Imco Extreme drive, being that most of the internals are Bravo 1 XR parts anyway.
So, here is the question... Should I stay with a standard length drive or should I go for a shorty lower? Would there be any advantages or dis-advantages to running a shorty on my hull. I know about the higher the "X", the less the hydrodynamic resistance will be, but there has to be a point of diminishing returns. By this I mean what would be the changes to the stability and handling with a shorty? I know that to get a my hull to run, I have to run alot of trim. I would be concerned that with a shorty, I may not be able to run as much trim before blowing out the prop. The thought has crossed my mind of running an Imco lower with that nice looking bullet. Then the question of not running fast enough for that bullet to be necessary comes to mind. I feel that a bullet would only slow me down due to the angle of trim. I feel that the bullet would be pointed to the ground causing extra drag. Any thoughts from you guys would be appreciated.
