I have a 1999 251 Convincor Classic with the 500HP Mercruiser Motor. I was wondering if there was an advantage to using a K&N Flame arrestor versus the stock. Also will this K&N filter fit clearance wise in the 251? The filter runs about 125$. Just wanted to know if I would see a difference. Or should I just save the money for gas!

If you are looking for a little eye candy, then the K&N arrestor is right for you. However, the couple of H.P. increase you will see from it will not make a noticable difference in performance. Those arrestors are really only necessary for modified motors that need to suck in more air.
As far as clearance goes, I have a friend with an older 251 with a 540. He has a K&N arrestor on it with no clearance issues.
By the way, I have a Vortech arrestor on my motor. I saw no difference in performance, nor did I expect any. I just like the way it looks.
