IVE HEARD THAT THERE OUTLAWING 2 STOKE MOTORS IN LIKE 2 OR 3 YEARS HAVE ANY OF YOU THOUGHT ABOUT THAT? LOOKE IN TO 4 STROKE? DOES ANYONE CURRENTLY RUN A 4 STROKE AND HOW DOES IT RUN?
There is a rumor going round that the fed's will be banning 2 stroke motors in some national parks, similar to what they have done with pwc's. I am not a fan of four strokes, simply too heavy and very limited to what you will find in high horsepower. Thaere are too many of the 2 strokes out there to do a complete ban, that would be like the fed's banning gas/diesel powered autos and making everyone use electric auto. That ain't happenin'!

I thought they were going to start making emission standards on all motors?

Some of the mercs are already complyant untill 2005. The trouble with the 4 stroke is people (unknowing tree hugers) think that because it a 4 stroke its got the same emmissions as a car. Boy did they get that wrong. Last time I looked at a honda 4 stroke outboard there was no converter on it. Makes ya wonder what's being feed to the population.

I just love my little 15 horse Honda that pushes my 14' Alumacraft. I'm going to pull it and install it on my new F-13/Playmate that Gus is picking up for me http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif
1995 2100BR/1995 225 Promax/23" Tempest
Come on JW, don't you think that 15 Horses is going cheap on the horsepower??? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif I'd say a 50-60 would be good on that and would sure get you up to speed, maybe even faster than some Checkmates... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/eyes.gif
Checkmates may not be the fastest boats on the water, but they are the nicest looking!

IVE HEARD THAT THE OIL MIXED IN WITH GAS COMES OUT THE EXHUST AND GETS IN THE WATER AND SUPOSUBLY HARMES THE FISH WHICH I DONT BELIVE, IF THAT WAS SO THERE WOULD BE FISH DYING OFF ALL THE TIME BECAUSE 2 STROKE OUTS HAVE BEEN AROUND A LONG TIME. DAMN TREE HUGGERS I HATE EM!
Regulated outboards by the EPA is on new production stuff, motors already in existance do not have to comply. Here is where the feds get us, in the early 90's (US) many state and county governments forced people to burn oxygenated and alcohol based fuels. Motors of any kind do not like these and if the fuel is more than 30 days old can do damage to your motor. Motors pre 1985 simply can't run on this stuff because of the rubber internals in the motor. Post 85, the internals are neoprene. If you have a motor with rubber internals and run this junk, you will melt your powerhead! To prevent this, you have to change all fuel lines in the boat, motor, diaphram, fuel pump, ect... The alcohol will cause detonation in any motor. This fuel, also when stored, will attrack 1 quart of water for every ten gallons of fuel in 2 weeks. If your tack is full, water sinks to the bottom and the fuel comes out the vent. Are the feds really doing good things for us? I say send the tree huggers out to the forest, drill a hole in the tree and f*** it!

The main problem with the carb 2 strokes is the intake and exahaust are open at the same time allowing the some of the fuel and oil (unburned) to go out the exhaust. The new DI digital direct injection has gotton rid of this problem by injecting the fuel/oil mix directly in the cylinder and high pressure. Thus elimiating the unburned stuff from going out the exhaust. What's been published to date is that it meets 2008 and beyond emmissions. So you have the torque and quick HP of a 2 stroke and the emmisions of a 4 stroke

My motor is probably one of the more 'polluting' motors out there. The 225 promax can really put out the smoke! I switched it over to 100% synthetic Pennzoil on the recommendation of one of the top engine builders/drag racers on the ScreamandFly.com board. The 100% Syn Pennzoil is TCW3 rated and biodegradable to lessen the impact on the environment. Now I feel better when I start the motor cold and fog for 'skeeters!
Another big advantage of this 100% syn oil is it's only $19.95 a gallon at Menards or Wallmart, almost the same price as the regular Mercury dinosaur oil.
I put 7 gallons of oil through the motor last summer, and the compression tested exactly the same as it did when I bought it.......

That's what my pal that owns the local marina sells, so that's what I buy. I get almost no smoke with my XR4. Now the 1987 Merc 60, or the 1969 Merc 9.8 on the other hand, are a completely different story.

you will see a lot more smoke from the guys who want the extra half mile an hour by disconnecting the oil injection and mix in the gas. Chris, that is probably why your other two merc smoke so much more, do I remember right with the 60 not being oil injected? I know the 9.8 isn't.

I had the oil injection removed from my motor. Not because I wanted the extra MPH. The main reason is if the oil injection fails you have a very short time to shut the engine down before it is junk. I didn't want to take that chance.

I was debating a 4 stroke on my MX 14, all I know is they are big and heavy.
Do you have any pics of you MX-14? I'm sure we'd all like to see...
