Hope that all of our American friends had a good Thanksgiving day, this especially extended to the soldiers and support staff overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This question I haven't seen yet,I'm going to try and purchase a manual for my Mercury outboard and would like to get an idea of the most appropiate one. Would it be a shop manual or a service manual?
In the short term can anyone enlighten me as to the proper code, or purpose, for the 6 wires coming out of the control box.
From what I can determine I have the following 1 black-ground, 2 gray-tach feed, 3 purple-switched, 4 brown w/ white stripe-trim ,5 light brown-temperature,6 light brown w/ blue stripe-unknown.

The engine involved is an 1994, 3.0 L., 225HP. carbureted .The control box is probably from the original 1989 175 HP. engine,if that affects the colour code.
Do you find that the Clymer manual is as correct as a factory manual would be,or is it better for a layman? Thanks

Control box? Is it on the engine (switch box) or is it the throttle control?

Sorry for the confusion, yes that is the throttle control box.

Looking at the wire codes you had listed, you have the newer controller. The light brown w/ blue stripe wire goes to the lubalert. This is your low oil res. warning.
I can see in the diagram that it goes back to the engine to a terminal block, then to the lubalert. Going from the controller forward they do not list it as each boat is different.
I hope this helps.

Also to answer your other question, the clymer manuals are ok, factory manual is the best, but the price of those is through the roof. The clymer is just like a chiltins manual for cars.

Thank you 175.
I will look for a Clymer, and if I can get a look at a Mercury.
The lubalert that you speak of is it a separate warning device or is it also incorporated into the warning beeper in the throttle controller.Excuse my questions but my old Merc was a 74 and a premix model so and I believe that the throttle control at that time only had an overheat warning horn.

Yes it is tied into the warring horn(beeper).
