What rpm are you spinning the high 5?
Before you start spending money on the motor I would get the set up dialed in.
Do you have a jack plate?
A 3 blade prop will be faster than the 5, but you will lose some hole shot.

I would try a 3 blade prop, maybe a laser II or tempest plus.I would try props before I did motor work. Then maybe a jack plate! And if the speed pickups enough maybe a nose cone with a low water pickup. These are all cheaper than motor work and you will get more bang for your buck!If you really feel the need to do some easy motor work, put a lightweight flywheel on her and change the reeds, with some jetting. Just 2 cents from me!Theres lots you can do!!Good luck!

No jackplate yet.. Looking for suggestions on that. I was told to try a 23p laser II double cupped to get to the low 70's by mike (I think) at checkmate. There is one I can get here for around 260 at a prop shop but dealer keeps trying to tell me it won't work... I am running right around 5800 6000 with high 5 depending on the trim.. I ran a double cupped 19 and was only in the 54 mph area and same rpms.. I am definately doin the reeds...

If mike(at checkmate) told you to try the 23p laser II thats where i would start. The reeds will help some, if you can try a 23p raker, thats if you can find on that is hubbed for a merc.Try all that you can!

I have a 200-220hp air-box for some better breathing... $35 shipped

Airbox and a 200 tuner will get you 200HP on that year motor (that's the ONLY differences)...provided you have the horizontial reeds (NOT VERTICALS).

If you mill the heads (.050"), relieve the exhaust on the mid section and pull the can, add a performance tuner, velocity stacks, boysen reeds, and JET it CORRECTLY! ...up to 220+hp is possible as long as the motor is 100% mechanically sound still...

Nose cone and jack plate will give you better handling and top end speed even on your stock motor!

I think I have vertical reeds.. pretty sure.. what is the difference with the use of 200 tuner? and does the air box switch out w/ no mods

Airbox on yours should have less inlet "breathing" holes... YES... it's a simple bolt on! Give me an E-mail and I can send you photos to compare to yours. Merc limited the HP on those by mainly by using restrictive airbox, reed stops, longer tuner, and sometimes smaller carbs... Also, If you have a few front photos of motor, to send... it's easy to identify the vertical reeds (vert. reed motors usually have the smaller carbs as well).

The 200 exhaust tuner is shorter, allowing the motor to expell exhaust gases easier (less restrictive than longer 150/175 tuner)... allowing the motor to turn higher RPM and raising the powerband.

The jack plate is the real key though. More setback is better. Daren34's 80 Diplomat with a johnnyrude 140 (2.0) made 10 mph difference and cured 90 percent of the chine walk over 55.
we were able to step up to a 22p raker at 6300 rpm with a 6 inch setback
