Chris,
Thanks for posting these. This is my "new" 1989 Maxxum 229 with the 460 King Cobra package. After changing/adjusting the shift cable and a couple of wiring things, the boat is running great. I purchased it off of ebay and it took me about 3 weekends worth of hot, sweaty, bloody, and greasy work to get it ready for the water.... it was worth every minute. This boat is a blast! The Checkmate factory guys sent me the 1989 brochure and the Hot Boats Magazine article.. It was the 1989 full size boat of the year. I look forward to improving the boat and being a part of the Checkmate family. I haven't seen any other Checkmates here in Virginia Beach so it looks like I'm flying alone for a while. That's ok... I get to pick on all the Donzi's and Baja's... This is a great forum!

Who was your contact at Checkmate?
I just picked up a 1985 Predictor with 115 Merc.
Would like to contact checkmate for any info they might have.
Enjoy the new boat!!

85,
Thanks! That's a great looking boat you have too. The upholstery is factory original and it has a few little cracks and stains but I spent about 6 hours scrubbing and cleaning... yuk! Not too shabby for a $6500 boat (with trailer and 41 hour engine) I believe the guy at Checkmate is Mike. He's the Parts and Performance guy so when you speak to the receptionist, she'll point you in the right direction. I think they have some old owners manuals too so you may want to ask. Great folks up there and they are VERY helpful. Tomorrow I'm taking it out with a GPS to get a baseline on the top speed (Speedo no worky) so I can measure the results of any improvements. I'll get the speedometer next week... I also need to replace the main electrical harness because both sides of the connector is nearly shot. This has been a salt water boat all it's life so you can imagine the electrical "challenges". Congrats on your "new" boat!
If you have a GPS, then you might want to forget about the speedo! They're never very accurate (unless you spend the big bucks on a Gaffrig and get a good pitot pickup). The GPS will always be within 1 mph, regular boat speedos are lucky to be within 10 mph at high speeds........
That's a great looking boat! Has a lot of the same lines that my Persuader had. Looks like you got yourself a heck of a deal
1995 Pulsare 2100BR/1995 Mercury Promax 225 2.5 EFI/ 1.87:1 Torquemaster/ RapidJack Heavy-Duty manual 10.5" setback/ 23" Tempest worked for ski duty

Thanks JW! I took a look at yours... Sweeeeet! I wish mine were a bowrider... but then again, the cuddy has it's uses.. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Recognizing the usefulness of the speedo (or lack of), it's more of a desire to get everything in working order. I think I got a pretty good deal and the guy I bought it from was about as honest as one can be. The paint is a little rough looking up close so maybe at the end of the season...........$$$$

Tony,
Great looing Mate! Congrats on the purchase. JW is right, you would be much better off buying a small hand held GPS then upgrading the Speedo. I have Gaffrig guages, and I still use my gps for speed and navigation. Good luck with the Mate! From what I can see in thePics, there is no reason why a professional boat detailer can,t have her looking showroom new in a day! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif
