I have a 1983 Checkmate Diplomat with a 175 Johnson outboard. It runs well and looks great; but the windshields are cloudy and no amount of cleaning helps. Any suggestions?

This question is not as bumd as it may first sound, but what is your windshield made of? Not all are glass...

Welcome to the board, I have the same trouble on my mate. The windshield is glass and has some hazing in the corners. I chaulked it up be bing old age. I have tryed to clean it but its in the glass not on it.

With alot of work, glass can be compounded, like oxidized gel coat, but like I said, very labor intensive. The reason I asked what it is... my windshield is not glass and scratches very easy and can be lightly compounded and polished, but can easily be ruined. You can pick up some Meguires plastic polish and give it a try. Use a cloth diper, not terry cloth or paper towels.

Thanks. My windshields are not glass. I guess they're some kind of plexiglass.

I figured they would be plexi or lexan. Meguires plastic polish will be safe and should work on that. If you do that, have the cloth diaper slightly damp, then follow the rest of the instuctions on the bottle. It may take a couple of times, but should work. A big mistake people make with plexi or lexan is put Rain-X on them, that is a big no-no. If you want the water to bead off, you your favourite boat polish, that beads the water nicely. Rain-X will yellow plexi and lexan. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif
