Hello, new member. I have an 82' Enchanter, that I am completely re-doing. The boat runs superb (81 mph this summer), cosmetically - its a dog. I took apart entire boat, i was ready to sand down gel-coat, took off engine and jackplate, and transom looked rotten. I have heard that this is quite a job. Behind jackplate, glass is very soft and cracking. Where the two tow hooks are, there are cracks around them. Also, where top 1/2 meets bottom half of boat, there are hairline cracks on the corners. Where do I start? I have heard that taking off top half of boat is required so that I can remove rotten wood. How do I know if wood is rotten? There are rust stains running from tow hooks - is that a good indication. If anyone has done this, please share the knowledge. Absolutley love the web-site, lots of great lookin' mates - hope mine will be one of those once again. Michael

From what you discribe it sounds like another transom rebuild. This is not as bad as it sounds. Look at your mounting holes for your jackplate. Poke a screw driver in the wood that you can see. Is it soft?. With the cracks that you discribe and the soft fiberglass at the transom, it sounds like you have a rot problem.
Also seperating the top and the bottom half is not that bad of a job. I just completed a transom rebuild. I am in the process of getting ready for paint. Boat is flipped upside down, blueprinting the bottom and installing a pad.
Shoot me an email with your questions, I have a ton of pictures of the process.

Thanks for the response back, if you can, throw some of those pictures up so I can see what your process was like. How do I post pics under the message?

Can you send me your e-mail address. I downloaded some pics of boat, in which I have questions - and I want to send them to you. I have no idea how to send on this web-site (I dont have an URL address for pics). I have top half completely off, want to keep going! The outside glass is shot, I have an urge to take it off, should I? The inside glass is so solid, why should I tear it off as well. Really dont know where to go from here. Anxious.

I dont remember if i asked anyone or not, has anyone had a problem putting top of boat back on after re-placing transom with additional bulk. I cant imagine wood fitting over slashwell correctly. Anybody have any approximate numbers on how much additional thickness is added after 3 layers of epoxy and cloth?

When I did my transom I went a little better that twice the thinkness of the factory. The width if the boat did not change. The length of the boat did not change. Where I ran into a problem was the splashwell and last 6" of the underside of the top half.
The splashwell was trimed to fit. This was done a little at a time, we would place the top half on. See where it was hitting and then trim a little and repeat. The underside of the top half had some supports attached from the factory. Those had to be trimed a little to clear the thicker transom. I also had to trim my knees a bit. I made them about a 1/4 to tall so they would have to be trimed when the top was installed.
