Bill, I checked out your old boat. Wow!! How did you keep it so shiny? I was the third owner of my Sportfire and I tried and tried to keep the gel coat's shine. It just seemed to be pointless. Do not get me wrong, it was in excellent shape but it needed work above the gunwale. I beleive the person who bought it was going to clear coat the top half of the boat.

What type of products did you use to keep it so nice? How often did you polish? Do you recommend hard water spot remover form Meguire's?

XSV.
Actually, keeping the shine on a dark boat is very easy. First, have it buffed out with a high speed buffer. Orbital buffers do not knock down enough of the gelcoat to get rid of all the oxidation. when it is buffed, start with a Heavy duty compound, then a light duty compound, then leveling compound or glaze, then polish. More than likely this is your problem, all the oxidation was not removed and/or very common, an automotive product was used. Gel coat needs to breath and needs a special product for it, that does not mean if there is a Corvette on the bottle, it is for boats. Yes, vettes are glass, but they are painted, not a gelled finish. Once you have the base done, a quick, good coat of polish once a month is all it needs. I could do that little diplomat in 10-15 minutes. I recommend you have the boat buffed out by pro's who do boats, not cars. Car detailers, mostly only have car products. I can't over emphasize how important marine products are, if you use car products, it will cause the gel to fade very fast or if you go and have the thing buffed out and do not put a good coat of polish on, it will fade very fast because you brought out the raw gel and did not protect it. Do not clear it, very expensive and most place do not completely disassemble it completely to do the job right, let alone find out what materials C-mate used to make sure the clear is compatible with the boat. I live and Die by a product called Race Glaze. I have tried hundred of products and get the best results from them. I do alot of boat restoration for my business and people are always amzed what can be fixed rather than repainted. For some reason the overall gel coat knowledge has stayed in the Southern US. For the most part, I have lived around different parts of the country, and even boat dealers in the North are pretty clueless. I saw on the forum and I had a dealer tell me once to use pledge. What a joke! Any question, you can always e-mail me at fischerbill@msn.com and I will be more than happy to help. By the way, the gel on that Diplomat I had and it was completely origonal. The winter before, it was very faded and looked like a classic repaint, but I wet sanded it and re polished it and actually, the pics that were posted was after a long summer on the beaches and needed to be rebuffed. It had a much better finish in June.

Anyone can e-mail me with questions and if anylives close to me, I will be happy to help or I am always available for hire to get a boat shining good again.

I have accumulated a lot of research into pricing (US dollars) and if anyone wnat to know a good price to pay, I averaged alot of different place to come up with this, 17.50 per foot and that includes, buffing, polishing the hull and deck, shampooing the interior, polishing glass on the interior, protecting the upholstry (not armor all) and waxing the trailer. By the way, never use an armor all type product on your interior. You will ruin it.

Thanks for the info Bill. I am seriously considering have my Pulsare profesionaly detailed by a local boat restoration shop. I will research what they can do and run it by you if you do not mind.

My Sportfire's future is in the hands of it's new owner , but I can guarantee my Pulsare ( although it is white ) will look new this summer even for a 1995!

Thank again, I will look into the "Race Glaze" products.

No problem at all speed, that is what I am here for. If you are interested, BayviewRick is supposed to become a Race Glaze dealer, or if that is down the road a while, I will be more than happy to get you some. I am not in the retail business, so I will just sell you the stuff for what I paid for it plus actual shipping. I do not want to step on anyones toes, so I would see if Rick can get it for you first, If not, I can do it.

That is a loaded question, depends on where I am doing my boating and how much room I have. If I had more room, but doing the same type of boating I am doing now, I would do the ZT 280, and if i was doing smaller lakes and relatively calm rivers, I would go with the 21 Pulsare. Even though I do most od my boating on the Mississippi, there is alot of commercial traffic and 40-50 foot cruisers with alot of wind. All of that equals very rough, unpredictable water plus my running Lake Michigan, so it is not too cut and dry.

I see where you are coming from. I am one a smaller river with very small waves. A Pulsare would be perfect for me and my buddies...

I have been told by C-mate to expect 65 (GPS) You really can't compare a 4000 pound boat to a 1300 pound boat. I garuntee, in 3 footers, I will kick the Pulsare's ass! It takes a whole sh** load of horse power to run at 75 in a deep V, and yes, for pleasre boats, 65 is still fast. Look at how many boats are still running in the 40's. That is like compareing a vette to a crotch rocket and saying the vette is a slow car. Have to go apple to apples.

Z06
02-26-2003, 07:46 PM
I agree with you there. 65 GPS is still pretty good. I got this e-mail from a guy today though, no clue how...

"There are two guys on Gun Lake in Michigan that run real close to100mph with 300 Convincors. There is also a guy that is on Hardy Dam that when he gets it running right should hit the mid teens with a 300 Convincor. He has a 502 with twin turbo's and a # 6 drive.Any questions please e-mail me back. Thanks, Gary Johnson"

Any ideas? I don't even know where he got my e-mail

He's right. Lots of money at Gun Lake, and also the home of the largest selling (used to be now) Checkmate dealer in the country. Premier Motorsports. They have just this year stopped stocking Checkmate in favor of generic brands of bow-riders family boats and ski boats. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/sick.gif

There's several big Convincors with huge power on Gun Lake and at Hardy Dam on the Muskegon River. It's much cheaper to have a blown big-block built up aftermarket than buy Mercury's own motors.

I would question the 200 with a single 502 running those kind of speeds. I spent some time in a 300 with twin naturally aspirated 502's (830 hp total), and that boat would run around 84-85 on the speedo. I would guess you would need between 1800 and 2000 hp to push th 300 to those speeds, and a twin turbo charged 502, I don't think, is getting that kind of ho. I could be wrong though. It would not be the first time.
Isn't that JW's neckof the woods?

Congrats Matt, i already miss that girl, any queations, let me know. I know that hull like the back of my hand. That boat loves to be aired out in a 6 inch chop, then she screams!!!!!!!!! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

My best run, light on fuel and a pretty empty boat was just over 68 on GPS. The air was only in the 60's with cool water also with a slight breeze to give a nice little chop. Friends on the shore say the gaercase was the only thing in the water. On an everyday set-up with the wife and a cooler full of those wobbly pops (thanks Chris)and 95 degrees she would run 60 all day long. Cruised at 50 on the pad beautifully. The gas guage liked that also.

If yopu can find a good one, it is an awesome hull. You have to learn the boat to get good speeds out of it. I am used to flying it from when I race hydros, some people get really nervous hanging it that much on the edge. That is when I have fun. I loved to take it out by myself and fly her. The hull is only 800 lbs and would really lay down with another person it the boat. You really have to watch the rpms too if You run it loaded vs. alone. I ran a 22p Raker at first and the acceleration was incredible, it would pin you in your seat, but I had to back off because it wanted to turn 6300 rpm's. I put on a 24 Raker and lost some mid range, but in moderate temperatures, it would peg right at 6 grand. The people who built the motor for me said I could turn it up to 6400 for bursts, but don't let it hang there. When I hit 68, I think I was at 6400. I had one eye on gps and onother looking for barge wakes

I saw one in the under 10K section of Chris' thread there that was alright. Now that I think about it, yours would have been nice...

Rick is right, the diplomat is a great little boat! With it's light weight(850pounds) and 89inch beam it is alot of fun and very stable. The boat is the most fun when it's just you and your able to hang the boat out. I hate to let mine go but wanted to move up to a bigger boat with a little smoother ride (and more speed). So I just bought a 1997 219 with a 7.4., cant wait to get it out! But that also means it's time to let my diplomat go. Rick at Bay Veiw was nice enough to post it for me on his sight and it can also be seen at boat trader.com. And a big thanks to chris for posting it on buy and sell

Hi everyone. My name is Matt and I'm the guy that's buying the Diplomat. BayviewRick told me about this board the other day so I figured I'd sign up and say hello. By the way. Bill, I live out in Mass so all that I've seen of the boat so far is the pictures. I have a good feeling that I'm going to love it. Talk to you all soon.

I think so too. Buy looking and hearing of how great this boat is, it is surely a great investment. I wish more people were like us today. Not many are... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/sleep.gif

Well, I figure that most of the time I'll be out on the Connecticut river running up and down Mass, New Hampshire, and Vermont. For bigger water I wanted to hit Lake Champlain in VT, my uncle's old cabin up there is on the shore. Oddly enough, that's where I saw my first Checkmate. I was about 9 at the time but I could tell that it was still the coolest boat in the water.
