Hi' I'm new to the board but have owned checkmates for the last 24 yaers. I've just bought a persuader 219 with a 454 300hp and trim tabs. I wanted to know what prop works the best at all aroud performance. I talked with mike at checkmate and he recomended a turbo four 24 pitch, just wanted to find out if anyone used this prop or how others props work on this set up.

Hi Pete, welcome to the board! With a light weight boat, that power, the prop Mike recommended should be fine. Hydromotive makes a nice prop, and Mercury Marine makes the Bravo and Mirage, these also are nice props! It's all about RPM's, you need to be at max. throttle (approx 4,800 rpm on your engine). If the RPM's are down/low, you'll need to pitch down, or go to the three blade. Rick

Thanks rick, what I do know is what mike had said, that this boat runs well with the tubo 4 blade. He said that with their testing that prop preformed the best, and that a 3 blade prop with the 454 and extra weight made the boat a little challenging to drive due to chime walking. The 4 blade helped with this and only had a lose of 1 to 2 mph. and gained alot on low end. Mike said the boat with the 4 blade should run 68 - 70mph at 4600 rpm's. Since I just got the boat (a 97 with 57hrs in excellent shape. I was told it does 65mph at 4600r's, this si with a 3 blade 14x23 stainless merc prop wich I know is not the right prop for the boat.)and have not had the chance to drive it yet. I just want to know what prop works the best before I buy one. This is my first I/O , Iknow alittle about them but have alot to learn. Now I have to decide if I want to sell my 89 diplomate with all the goodies, but thats another story. pet
Pete,
first, welcome to the board! Second, check with your local Merc dealers, most if not all will allow you to try props before you buy. Mercury encourages dealers to do this. If you go in with a couple of ideas, give them a credit card number, then hit the lake and see what you like. If you do not like any of them, provided you did not damage any, there should be no charge. If you like one you can buy it.

Thanks for the info Bill, I'll have to give that a try. The only problem that I found is that dealers around here do not stock alot of props for I/O's. I even had some trouble finding dealers to let me try props for my o/b. I'm going to keep looking for new dealers around the area and citys near to let me try props. If anyone knows of a good dealer around the janesville WI area please let me know. Pete

Rick thanks for all the info and tickets, you were a big help and look forword to seeing you at the milwaukee boat show. pete
Pete,
I do not know anything about the Janesville area, but I am sure someone in Madison would have some, it is a little drive, but Main Marine in Racine stocks quite a few props and I am sure there is someone around Lake Delevan or Lake Geneva. If you strike out with those, there has to be somone down around Rockford or go a little east around the Chain of Lakes.
I don't know how far Janesville is from Chicago, but I have a place by my house called Airmarine-Propulsion. I know they demo props for the weekend for I think 20 bucks. They are the best in this area and I know most boat dealers in the area go there. It might be something to look into.
