I have heard of some leakage problems with these models. I am currently in the process of purchasing one and would like to know where to check for the leaks. Also how can the leaks be corrected? Thanks for all your help!!!!!
One big thing to always check on an older I/O boat is the bellows that run inside the outdrive. They are rubber 'tubes' that house the items that must pass from inside to outside the boat, all tucked up inside the outdrive. If you trim the outdrive up to the 'trailer' position and get underneath with a flashlight, you'll be able to inspect the bellows.
Bellows go bad because of two things: Age and improper storage. Never store an I/O with the outdrive lifted up. When the outdrive is tilted way up the bellows is stretched out and will speed the aging of the bellows. When I had an I/O, I built a small ramp that got the trailer high enough off the ground that I could safely lower my outdrive all the way down for storage.
When looking at the bellows, if you see cracking or even a split/hole in the bellows, then you'll have leaking. It's not an easy fix either, the outdrive must be pulled to change the bellows. $$$$
