Hey Rick,

I was wondering if you know what is involved in buying a boat in the United States and bringing it back to Canada. Any ideas on what the duties would be?

This is ugly... It's a simple process, but expensive. all thats required is a Bill of Sale and Certificate of Orgin while traveling/crossing.

At time of crossing, I'm guessing Buffalo,NY to Fort Erie,On. You'd need to go through a Customs Broker, at this time, you need to pay the Goods and Services/Duties-Custom Tax. This is 8% of the purchase price, plus whatever the brokerage fee is. Each Broker is different, not working for the Government so prices can vary per broker. Now you've got the boat home... Provincial Tax adds another 7% of the purchase price to your new boat. Hmmmmmm 15% in taxes... whew! Check out this website for more info...

Well all things considered Rick...that's not too bad!!

Because, even if I buy a boat up here, I pay 15% sales tax. 7% GST and 8% Provincial Sales Tax. That just leaves the brokerage fees.

15% in taxes.. whew! I thought our extra 1/2 % to pay for the new improved Packer stadium was a lot. I guess 5.5% isn't that bad!

Chris, your looking roughly at $150.00.. I e-mailed Craig Putman to see what he went through.. this just came in, here is a copy of his e-mail to me. Craig is a great guy, great customer, he bought a 31' beautifully restored 1963 Chris Craft Sea Skiff and ran it from Green Bay to Windsor,On by water, a very cool adventure!


"He should call Canada Customs to see if the process has changed since last year? When I brought my boat across, I had to call immigration at 1-888-CAN-PASS as soon as I docked the boat in Canada, tell them I was bringing a boat in from the US and wanted to get it licensed in Canada. Then I had to call the local Canada Customs Marine Office in Windsor, there should be a local office in Toronto. Canada Customs Marine Office will then send someone out to appraise the boat, within the next week, to see if they agree with the value of the boat as shown on the sales receipt. Then I had to go down to the office to pay GST (7%) and PST (8%) for a total of 15% tax. Then, if the boat is under about 36 ft, they give him a set of license numbers to put on the boat and you are done. If the boat is over 36ft (its actually anything over 15 gross tons) then the boat has to be registered with the Department of Transport Canada, Office of Ship Registration. I hope this helps. If he is bringing the boat back by water, he should also get an I-68 form from US immigration office that allows a Canadian resident to be aboard a US vessel in US waters. Only 5 more months to launch!"
