View Full Version : ZT260 Motor (Too Much is Just Enough)

It looks like the quest for 100mph may be over soon. I've been waiting to post a picture for months. Here are a few sneak peeks at the new motor.
http://www.moorhuscomputers.com/side2.jpg
http://www.moorhuscomputers.com/front.jpg
http://www.moorhuscomputers.com/rear.jpg
Engine builders seem to have two speeds, Slow and stop. After this weekend it looks like I have them in slow gear again. (Which beats stop any day)
Everything but the braded hose and wiring was done. Since the pictures were taken that’s done too. It's time to dyno and with any luck this weekend is the big splash.
Under the shine is a 540ci, callies racemaster crank, oliver rods, ross pistons and AFR 357CC AL heads. Solid lifters with a 680 lift 255, 260 duration 114 lobe sep. On top are two Whipple 2.3L EFI blowers with 94Ib injectors.
Any guesses on top speed? We have 5000Ibs of boat with fuel and driver. HP will vary by octane, but it should be in the 1000-1200 range.
If this dosen't do it, Checkmate will have to build a new cat.

Erik,
They are twin 2.3L Whipples. Same as DeNooyer's, but fuel injected rather than carbed. I also have the same Cam in there. That’s how we know it can make 1200+ HP on race fuel.

Bob,
So what's your top speed number?
DeNooyer's engines have 200hrs on them, but they need a valve job ever 60hrs. Jason said with my new heads 150hrs would be ok. The bottom end should last 500hrs. I still have to adjust the valves every 40hrs.
The price we pay for speed.

dave your intervals are not bad considering the hp . impressive all the way around .as for mine ,i've only made a couple quick test runs . still uncomfortable til i find the oil leak and exhaust problem. haven't been able to get to it and my marina is burried.and the rain ain't helping ..... speedo showed 79 , up from 70-72 last year .will gps it this weekend if everything else falls into place.are you going to be able to get any pics running ? a profile shot should get on the cover of checkmates next brochure .........

I would be all over the engine builder for that crap. Far too much $$$ for oil leaks and engine noises.
When my mate hits the water this weekend, I'll put all the pictures on the board. Maybe even a shot of the gauges including the GPS at high speed.
I'd be surprised, but if Kip wants a shot for a brochure I'd be happy to help.

zt ,,i'm not jumping on anyone yet . the oil leak could be a fitting that was damaged on the install and the noise i still think is in the silent choice . it was on the dino with dry exhaust. it was an absoulte bitch getting the engine in with a 3 inch exstension on the coupler. we'll find it , but i just had to close the hatch and get away from it sunday . we both know its the price you pay when you give up "stock"......

Bob,
Good luck with the problems, you need to finish her up for the weekend. Sounds like some long nights if you plan to tackle this yourself. If all else fails you can drive less and drink more (like me) http://checkmate-boats.com/groupee/forums/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/beer1.gif

Bad news-
Jason seems to be in stop mode again. Waiting for some small parts and the dyno is giving him trouble. On the bright side he is putting in the old motor for the weekend. So 90mph will have to due for now.
When the new motor is in I will have a crash vest, Full face helmet and two kill cords on me. I just wish there was a way to put a #6 drive in. (No room no how) Vinny knows I will be ripping the XR drive apart. Glad I have a spare.....
vinny p.
05-25-2004, 10:45 PM
It is a shame that there really is no alternative when it comes to drives. As Checkmate owners, even if we had the $50k or more for a #6, we just can't fit the transmission that it requires. I don't see an XR living too long with that kind of power. But, it will be a hell of a ride while it does hold together. I don't think that the cost of fuel is a factor to consider, the cost of a couple of drives a season is what would be my concern. Good luck and be safe..
Dave's ZT260
05-25-2004, 10:51 PM
Vinny,
There is one new solution on the market. IMCO's 4X4 drive with an extension box that houses a transmission. I may buy one if it holds together for others. Otherwise it's keep a spare for that rainy day. God knows I will.
vinny p.
05-26-2004, 12:01 AM
I didn't know that it is possible to house a trans in an extension box. I have not researched that possibility. I will most likely never have the kind of power to worry about that sort if thing. It sounds like a good one, except that these Checkmates don't seem to react to well to extension boxes. But, considering the alternative of breaking drives, I would pick the box. How much power can an Imco 4X4 take???
Dave's ZT260
05-26-2004, 11:02 AM
No one other then Mercury's #6 drive claims to be able to handle 1000+HP. But IMCO's 4X4 and Bmax seem to be able to handle much more than the 600HP the XR is rated for. The Bmax doesn't need a transmission, but the 4X4 does. I would go to a Bmax but I have heard others complain about them. I do not want an extension box period.
Anyone have something to say about the Bmax?
vinny p.
05-26-2004, 07:17 PM
While I have never had a B-Max, I have heard there have been problems shifting them. I am not certain whether or not the problems have been repaired. I have seen them hanging off a boat last year. They look pretty heavy duty, but looks can be deceiving.
Dave's ZT260
05-26-2004, 10:26 PM
I spoke to Dean at Bmax today, and I'm this close to buying one. The cost through May is almost 2K less than normal. If I don't hear something bad soon tomorrow one will be on order.

Dave's ZT260
05-28-2004, 10:25 AM
If memory serves, you are talking about the lighthouse in Coxsackie and its 5 miles south to Hudson island. The main channel goes to the east we are at the north tip on the west side. You will see all the boats there. Mostly checkmates.
If you know where Hagger's harbor is in Anthens then your within 1/4 mile of the island.

I just got some dyno numbers. At 12Ibs boost and running rich we were at 1150HP and 1000 Ft-Ibs torque. We had to order more pulleys to make 15Ibs. So by Thursday we will have the final numbers. Next week the engine finally goes in. IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!
Chris

Dave's ZT260
06-22-2004, 11:37 PM
I'll get some video next week.
The compression is at 8 1/4:1, so we can run 10ibs on 93 octane and up to 15 Ibs on 110. I don't think I will need any more than 1000hp to hit 100mph. But it's nice to know you have more power than boat.
Dave's ZT260
07-02-2004, 11:48 AM
So the dyno numbers are in. Race fuel and 16Ibs boost 1360HP, 93 octane 10Ibs boost 1015HP. Jason said he's never made more than 1300Hp before, so he is pretty proud of this engine. Now if he can just finish installing the engine today. I'll be out there this weekend for testing. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The mate is back in my procession. We ran her for a couple hours dialing in the air fuel ratio on Lake George yesterday. The Police just loved the sound... Unfortunately the water was rough and I used a 29 Hydro 4 blade to test. So I couldn't get in to the real power (5000rpms was all), but it ran 87mph. Within the next day or so I will be running a better prop and on smoother water. I think she will hit 100 and I'm still on 93 octane.
BTW, you have to hear this run, It is ridiculously loud. I'll get some video clips later today.

It's a windows media file. You should just be able to click on it and it should play. If you don't have windows media player then you need a player that will play the .avi file format. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Vinny-
Download the latest real player from www.realplayer.com (http://www.realplayer.com)
I just got in from a late night run. With the 24 mirage plus it would run 92mph at 6100rpm. The slip is at 17% so I will put a 1" spacer in tomorrow and try again. I think I need a 24 or 26 Bravo prop to be sure. Anyone have one I could try? I also think the exhaust is holding me back. I plan to order new CMI Big tubes this week.

Dave,
What are your plans for the old motor?

You gotta have a backup plan!!!
The summer is too short.

I don't blame you at all. When you are messing around with tempermental motors like you are, you need a back-up. The reason I asked is that a friend is in the market for a good blower motor. We don't care if it needs to be freshened, it just has to have good parts.

What's the latest on this monster ...? Can't beleive your spinning props that small.....I think Kunkel was turning a 30 or 32 bravo with the 253 he had running 108 last year? They could tell you for sure. They also said the new 5 blade Maximus was a good prop for high horsepower set up's.

Kip-
You have to remember I'm running a Bmax with 1.3 ratio. My main issue right now is the exhaust system. I need more flow so I ordered Stelling tubular headers. Top speed thus far is 95mph. With the new headers I'm pretty sure I could go over 108mph if I could control it. Time will tell.
On another note, I just rewired part of my boat. The issue surrounded the fuses that were added to the trim pump and trim tab pump leads. The wire from these units was #8 but when the factory hooked them to the battery switch they used #12 with fused links. The increased resistance and 35-amp load caused the fuses to blow all the time. I replace them with #8 wire and the problem is gone. I’ll love to know who decide to go to from #8 to #12 wire at the factory. Hopefully these issues are not continuing now. Though you would like to know.

DID I HEAR MY NAME? WE ARE RUNNING A 36P BRAVO 1 WITH A 1.50 GEAR RATIO AT 6000 RPM.
WE HAVE MADE SOME CHANGES AND NEED TO GET TO THE LAKE AND TEST IT OUT....BEEN TO BUSY WITH CUSTOMER BOATS....WILL POST AFTER TESTING.....GOING TO TRY A 32P MAXIMUS ON THIS SET UP JUST TO SEE WHAT IT WILL DO....HAS WORKED PRETTY GOOD SO FAR ON OTHER STUFF WE TRIED SPINS JUST LIKE A 36 BRAVO 4 BLADE AS FAR AS RPM...GREAT OUT OF THE HOLE AND VERY SMOOTH TOP END NUMBERS ARE RIGHT THERE WITH THE BRAVO.
A LITTLE TO MUCH DIAMETER.
ZT 260 WHAT EXHAUST WERE YOU RUNNING BEFORE?

Emi thunder is on there right now. Good for under 800hp but not at this level. I'll be very interested in the maximus numbers. You could cut the diameter down and lab it. I did on a hydromotive 4 blade and it worked well on my persuader.

Have you gotten a chance to run the maximus yet? I would be real interested if it works well at 100mph+.

Nothing to report really- Runs 95 but I need the new exhaust to go faster, it was ordered 10 day ago, but its still a few weeks out. I did crack the mirage prop I had. Mercury is replacing it. Must have been a defect. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
