My '74 merc 1150 will not reverse. Forward works just fine, although when it engages it does 'bump' a little. When moving into reverse, it sounds like a couple bearings rattling around inside a coffee can. When I am on land and have the water wings on, the prop DOES move in a reverse direction. When in the water, it isn't enough to propel the boat. I didn't find any metal in the fluid when I drained the lower unit. I figured if something was stripped it would affect forward also. Any suggestions (other than getting a newer motor) http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ?? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I'm not much of an outboard guy but try this, With it out of the water. Put it in reverse(Not Running) and try and turn the prop with your hands. If you can spin the prop clockwise then the gears are either stripped or your shift assembly is out of adjustment.

possibly your shift cable is not allowing the reverse to fully engage...so while your boats in the water loosen or remove the cable...enough for you to manually shift to reverse completely...if you now have reverse power...then just re-adjust your cables...if you still don't have reverse...teardown time......

You need new gears shift adjustment is only if you are not fully in to gear it is never that simple http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/zx11pissed.gif I hope I'm Wrong
