Who are "The Experts" you ask?

Well, they are Rick and Dr. Z from Bayview Marine Center. Bayview Marine Center, is a full service Checkmate dealership located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Dr. Z is their Service Manager and resident tech expert, and of course most of you already know Rick who has been hanging out with us here on the board, who is one of the owners of Bayview.

Rick and Dr Z have graciously offered to answer any Checkmate related questions you might have.

So, if you are wondering about the book value of a used Checkmate you might be looking to buy or sell...get the answer here!

Perhaps, you are looking for some setup tips or whether an odd ball part is available for your Checkmate...well, wonder no further.

If you have a Checkmate related question and need an answer then this is the forum for you! /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

And I'll help any way that I can. I have quite a bit of knowledge, but it's basically from '92 on. For old time knowledge, you can go to Scream and Fly and ask for SCT and/or Instigator. They're both old time Checkmate people. SCT is my good friend and a Checkmate owners son. You can also call the factory and ask for Kip Combs, he's one of the other owners sons. Bill Combs is the 'in view' owner, SCT is the son of one of the silent partners. Just a litte trivia there.

What prop are you running now.
What is the status of the engine, is it stock?, if not what mod have been done to it?

The only problem your going to have is, once we get done building the motor, you won't have any money left for the dinner, unless we use McDonalds dollar menu (ha ha).. seriously though, your stock hp is 365, to get you 80mph, at least high 70's you'll probably need about 600hp! Sweeeet! How do we get there? We take your existing block, or start over with a Bowtie or Merlin II, add different heads, Merlin or Brodex, flowported, bronze guides, guide plates, etc,Inconel extreme duty stainless valves, maybe even titanium just to be cool! Brodix intake with a Holley Dominator, D.U.I. Distributor, Stainless headers...much much more, you can add a Pro Charger to your existing engine, probably will give you low 70's... and the Drive.. bad news.. the Bravo I will take it, but only for a little while. tom Drez.. my partner is running the above engine and already has twisted the prop on the shaft of the outdrive during a poker run, running around 78 mph in a... Fountain.. ugh.. 270 Fever(78 is pretty good in a single engine boat of that size). You can add nitrous fairly reasonable, use the NX with the pre fueler for peace of mind, that way you know the fuel mixture is correct, so things don't go click click boom like the Saliva song... this will get you around 160hp, a stock engine can handle about 20hp per cylinder increase on the bottle without harming anything, when it's done right! So.. drop the boat off to us and we'll have you ready for Spring!! You can seriously add power with intake, carb, cam, and distributor. A common mistake people make is they add the cam, carb, and intake, but forget about the ignition, now you have the extra fuel but can't burn it, this is the stumbling/ignition breaking up you hear at the local drags.. to much fuel, no way to burn it. Now how about the Big and Tasty.. hold the cheese! If you have any questions, e-mail us at broker@tds.net and we can quote you on any engine upgrade your interested in doing, the basic mods won't get you 80, but will probably get you low to mid 70's depending on whats done. You can also Check the hull, blue printing a hull will get you 2-3 mph. Hope this helps! Rick

I have a question on our recent purchase of a 1989 Checkmate Vision 221, with a 350, and an alpha one outdrive. Could you please advise me on a prop that we can use for recreation and water skiing. As this boat did not come with a prop.
thanks

Ken, you can also call Mike Combs at Checkmate. I don't have the number on hand, but you can get it on their web-site. When, if you call, have all your info ready, motor, h.p., drive, and gear ratio. If you do not know the ratio, give Mike you VIN and he can look up what it came with.

Hello Rick, new to the site seen previous posts on other forums.I have 97 280ZT & seen posts about adding vents to breathe better? Any Advice-Have 502ci MPI runs about 64mph GPS.Would it help? Thanks & THINK BOATING http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

Welcome to the site.. What we looked at doing to Gregs..(Gslingers) ZT-280 was to cut vents into the side for better breathing. The new 280's have them in the side, but the decks slightly different, yours is more rounded making it a little more difficult, but it could be done. Rick

Welcome gojo! I guess I learn something everyday, I did not realize Mate made an outboard Persuader. I am familiar with the stern drive persuaders, they are a great performng boat, not too many boats can beat them power for power.

I just purchased a 17 foot checkmate sportfire,It has a 200hp blackmax. The trim gauge is there but is not hooked up and looks like it has no wires going to it. Is this hard to fix and how much will it cost. The boat is so fast. But I am new to owning a speed boat am am not sure what position the trim should be in when taking off out of the hole and then how to adjust as I start to plane off and then to cruz most efficiently. I can tell of course when the trim is all the way up and all the way down even without the gauge. the boat came with a SS chop prop and a stock prop. The SS is on now. I am not sure which is better to use and what for. The boat becomes unstable it goes so fast.Is this a trim problem? Thaks in advance Greg

I am in the process of Purchasing a 94 Persuader 219 for 15,000. From what I have seen this is a decent price. One thing that puzzles me this boat has a 460 in it and an OMC out drive majority of these boats i have seen had a 454 and the Mercruiser outdrive. Can you tell me how common this was? The guy claims this boat will do 80. Is that possible in this boat, How much Hp would it take for the bot to do that? Also give me a decent blue book value? What is better a roller trailer or one with Boards?
I appreciate your time and help You guys sure seem to have the answers.

First, goto NADA.com, and that will give you a rough estimate on price without options. 80, no, not with that motor, low 70's on GPS maybe. Bunk trailer is the ONLY way to go. If it was me, I would never own that drive, the motor is still a GM block, but I think the drives are junk.

The OMC 460 King Cobra is a big block Ford 460 cubic inch w/340 horsepower. You definetly see mostly Merc's on Mates but the OMC was an option.OMC used G.M. and Ford engines on their I/O's.I guess most parts are still available but, I'm I Mercrusier guy http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I appreciate the input. Do you guys have any recomendations for what prop to run. I found out the guy pumped the OMC 460 to about 420hp that is why he claimed a higher speed. There is a 4blade 21pitch prop and a 3 blade 23pitch prop both SS. I am wondering if those are compatible or would I need something different for max performance. (I would much rather a Mercruiser and a 454 myself but this price was hard to pass up, besides I can't find these boats in AZ.)

GM, 460, what the hell was I thinking?!?!?! Sorry. Did you know there is a new Checkmate dealer down there, somewhere in AZ???

Your best bet is to pick the guys brain about what props he's run on it.Also find out what kind of maintenance was done on the motor & outdrive.Talk to some mechanics and see if those drives can handle 420 hp.I had an 87 Starfire with a 350 Cobra OMC,Worked fine for the year I owned it.Good Luck

Alright I have ran the boat it runs great. I am just having problem with Cavitation plates. After I get the boat on plane (which takes a bit) I start to raise the cav plates to level them. then the boat starts cruising across the water when i hit about 50MPH the boat dives of to the left so I have to keep messing with the plates to keep the boat level. The only thing I think possible is the Hydraulic lines are bleeding off. Has anybody ever experienced a problem like this?
