My battery was dead the other day so I charged it up took it down to the lake today and put a meter across the battery and it reads 11.5 to 12 volts and does not change with the engine running.I figured it should read 14 volts or so.It appears the stator isn't doing its job.If I replace the stator should I also replace the rectifier or am I headed in the wrond direction. The motor is an 85 Merc 115hp inline 6.Any suggestions?
Go with the rectifier first, that's the usual culprit. Take a look at the stator, is it brownish? If so, then it's probably bad too. Also, the system won't usually charge until your rpms are at 1300+ rpms, make sure you rev the motor a little to get your voltage readings...........

I did rev the engine up and the needle on the meter didn't budge off of 12 volts. The 2 yellow wires coming off the stator to the rectifier were bare in spots and looked like they had been hot at one point in time.I am going with the stator and rectifier,I measured the stator leads per the manual for other problems and some of the wire to wire readings were wrong plus one of the wire to ground reading was incorrect. We will see what happens....
