Ok guys and gals. It time to let the cat out of the mate bag.
The color of the boat will be viper yellow. The trim line around the hull just under the rub rail will be black.
I have pop up cleats, hardware, cup holders and dash switch plate are black. The air inlet vents on the merc cover will be powder coated yellow. I have Yellow and red mercury racing decals that are for the cowel. The back of the cover will read 150 in yellow.

I am also tossing the idea around about adding some 70's racing stripes that run from the bow to the stern, But instead of the normal 2 black lines I will have them done in black checkerboard.
What do you think?

WOW!! I didn't catch this thread until now, but that is some project. Early Congrats on your dedication! Will be looking forward to your further updates and the testing phase. No matter what the initial results, I think you can work through any handling issues with seat time and proper setup. The question is: if it gets up on that pad, can you hang on at triple digits??
175checkmate
05-26-2004, 11:38 PM
Checkmark, I don't know if she will run triple digits, but if I can get into the mid 70's I will be happy.
Thanks for the support.

Looking good gus.I'll risk a guess at the mid 80's.That custom pad has to be worth 10 mph ehh. http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

Gus,I've always liked checkered flag graphics on anything. Would you paint them on or use vinyl? With vinyl,if you didn't like em you could just peel em off. GIT-R-DONE
175checkmate
05-27-2004, 11:16 AM
If I go with the checkered stripes they will be in vinyl. It will depend on how the yellow layes out. If it looks like there is too much yellow then I will go with the checkers.
Mid 80's huh Brian. I would have to get another prop and go up about 3 pitch sizes or my lil merc would be spinning to the moon.

05-27-2004, 11:31 AM
Isn't that a 15 footer? I've seen other Check 15's that have hit mid 60's with V4 power. Can't imagine what that will do with 60-80 more HP. I guess triple digits is a bit much; probably more like 80's when you figure 1.5mph per 10 hp. That pad is a big variable though!!
175checkmate
05-27-2004, 12:47 PM
The boat is 16.5' with the engine on a hyd jackplate with no setback it ran 69mph. Now with the 5" of setback and the pad. Not to mention a transom that does not move around. Not sure how fast it will go.

Yep I saw that. 94mph on an untouched hull that was 30 years old. I have seen the inside of a checkmate. They have about 3 times the fiberglass built into the hull.
But none the less when I go fast I have the kill switch hooked up and the lifejacket on.

I saw pictures of that boat when it was for sale in the barn. Cleaned up nice. I like the part about the balsa core looking goo when it is sealed. Leave it to checkmate to figure out how to seal a core and do it right.
Its only a 1/2 a project. Just a floor. I can do that in my sleep. Pull the top 1/2 and did into the transom. Thats when the fun starts.
Big Dave
07-31-2004, 06:49 PM
Awesome what you have accomplished!!!
I just bought a '75 trimate II without an engine for $675.00.
the interior looks like new, but the transom sounds like it is loose from the wood and the floor is rotten under the gas tank. I think I am going to follow your example and seperate the hull and go straight across with the new transom.
175checkmate
07-31-2004, 10:37 PM
Big Dave, A major lesson I learned on mine is seperate the top from the bottom and dig out all the wood from the inside. I cut the outter skin and I regretted later. Took me forever to get the body lines right again.
Mine was also thicker than it needed to be. I could have just gone with 2 ply's of 3/4".
Shoot me an email if you have questions. I have a ton of pictures of what I did to mine. Helping is no trouble.
Big Dave
08-01-2004, 12:00 AM
Thanks for the tip.
I am going to take the top off, and take the boat to my brother. he restores wooden boats for a living. He came up from Houston today and looked at the boat and said the same thing you did.
Wish us luck!!!
Still have to find a 175 or 200?? and a jack plate. I am not sure what setback to run on this hull.
175checkmate
08-01-2004, 03:57 PM
Thats great. Another tri-mate saved. If you are going to take the boat someplace to do the transom leave the hull and top together. This will prevent the hull from loosing its shape.
I am going to run a 6" setback plate to start. I also have a set of 2" spacers that I can add.
I would think 6" would be engough.
With a 200 and the prop shaft 4" below the my boat would run right at 70 with a 25p laser 2 prop. They are a blast to drive.

Well, tha saga continues. Kind of took a well needed break from the boat, so now its time to get back to work.
Just got done laying what I hope to be the last layer of resin in the low spots on the pad. Still have a bit of sanding to do here and there, but the primer is in sight. After its primes I will really be able to tell how well I did and what still needs some work. Ah the joy of sanding.

I really liked it. when running wide open, the spray was coming out at the back corners of the boat.

If at all possable try to leave the back (stern) transom skin on and work from the inside. On eof the biggest problems I had was putting the back skin on. It would be easy to split the hull and work from the inside. Let me know if i can help.

Well after spending another afternoon sanding I would like to say its getting close. One side done with a few places to fix. The other side to go. Blueprinting the hull is a major pain. Getting everything strieght is the hard part. I guess its better to spend the time on it now then be very unhappy with it if it was not as right as I could make it.

It should be real fun trying to tune the motor to run at 4000ft. I am hoping that the rest of the mods that where done allow me to have about the same RPM.
4000' you're going to need to re-jet. Less air so it'll run too rich, you need to lean it up to make up for the lack of air........................

I am thinking I will have to go down 1 jet size. I will have to bring the jets that are in there now to mich with me next summer. Would be way to lean at sea level. Great more parts to carry in the boat.

I AM DONE SANDING ON THIS BOAT. Well at least untill the primer fly's. If I can catch a day above freezing I can wheel the boat outside to wash all the dust off. Kick the car out of the garage, put the boat in the middle and plastic off a spray booth. Then its primer time. YEA BABY. Then, well sand somemore. I remember why I decided to turn wrenches instead of doing body work. Does it ever end. Stay tuned.

The stock windshield will be going back on. But like the boat its not stock any more. Here is a pic. The one on the left is factory, the one on the right is about 6" shorter. Made a world of difference in the way it looks.

The shorter windshield is going to definitely make a world of a diffrence in my opinion. much sportier. I was never a fan of the big windshields. http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/sick.gif
Reminds me of the old glastron bow riders...yuck! http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/sick.gif
Did you replace the glass or just cut it?
I am thinking about chopping the predictors WS about an inch or so...
175checkmate
01-15-2006, 11:40 AM
The windshield was plexi glass. I just taped it off and cut it. Worked out real nice.
For the record, you cannot cut down a glass one, they are tempered and will shatter into a 1000 pieces.
Boston Predictor
01-15-2006, 03:14 PM
Thanks Mark, Thats what I thought. I asked about this before and the guy said the same thing. I was going to use plexy for the predictor anyways because its cheap, light and so easy to work with.
Gus, how did you get the curve in the plexy glass?
did you use a heat gun or something?
175checkmate
01-15-2006, 06:52 PM
I got lucky on the curve. When I took the measurements for the cut one of the factors in how much I took off was the curve. There was enough room in the bottom window fram to make up for the difference. It was very minor and I did not have to reshape anything.

Ya just have to love polyester spot filler. Goes on nice, comes off nice. What I though was about 12 spots turned into a bit more. Nothing major just real little stuff. The average human man have never seen it when the paint is on, but I would. Sand sand sand, oh I love it. Also on a side note. Epoxy primer is the cats butt. I can't believe how easy it sands. Does not clog up the paper and smooth down real nice. Getting better every day.

Jim, I think the "JW" mod came out well
Bringing the middle lifting strake all the way back to the transom will be the BEST mod you did! Looks great.
The pad might have to be shaved down if it's too hard to balance on being that high, but you've got some solid depth to work with right?

Awesome job Gus.
What are you using to spray?
175checkmate
01-19-2006, 09:19 PM
The gun I am using is a husky HVLP gun, works great. Had to thin the epoxy primer down a bit to get it to lay right. Those hvlp guns are great. Almost no over spray.
JW, When I built the pad I ground down the point of the "V" untill it was flat. The wood sitting on top is 3/4 ply. I then layed about a 1/4 of biaxle on top of that. The sides make it look high as its boxed in to make it stronger. I am thinking that the tricky part is going to be in the weight distribution. I think wiht a bunch of testing I should be able to drive it. If not, well I will look dam cool going 40.

Well today I desided to see about putting the mercury decals on the cowl. I have a few different styles. The 1st one I put on said mercury racing, mercury in white and racing in yellow. This was A decal that has the clear backing, like it would go great on glass. Well looked ok on the cowl, but you could see the clear backing. Looked like crap in bright light. So I peeled it off. I decided to go with the simple yet carry a big stick concept. The ones that are on are factory merc decals. Very simple and with the yellow louvers held up it really sets it off. I may go with a red pin stripe but have not desided yet.

When I need vinyl lettering or graphics I GO TO A local sign shop that does vinyl work, if you give them a sketch of what your looking for and dimensions they can whip up anything you want. if there simple thay usually dont cost much. On the flames on the side of the cowl I did,They had several styles of flames in there computer, I just picked the color and he stretched them to look right in my space and I had them in five minutes for about $20.00

AH the dreaded flip. Really no trouble at all. Get a hold of about 15 old tires and some carpet pad. I rested the boat upside down on the old tires. Made a line of old tires and covered them with the carpet pad. I made another line of tires where the center of the hull will rest on the floor. Take the first line of tires and tuck them under the edge of the hull. Buy 2 cases of your favorite beer. Call in the favors of at least 6 friends. Pick up on one side with a guy staged on the other side so the boat will not tip all the way over. Once the boat is vertical switch sides. Lower the boat down on the tires you placed in the center. I then lined up the trailer and used the wench to crank the boat on the trailer. Then sit back, drink beer and tell boating lies.

Well had some fun today. Mounted the new hyd jack plate to the merc. That was a good time. The plate is made for the newer style motor mount configuration. The mid I have is old school 1978. After some minor adjustments with a carbide all is well.
Then I figured I would drill the new holes in the transom for the new plate. I had already filled and sealed the holes from the first plate, that one had the old style pattern.
Made a template of the mounting holes. Measure more times than I care to admit. Centered with the back of the boat. Centered with the pad. Correct height, level and looking good. Drilled the 1/2 holes and stepped back to look at the handy work. All would be right in the world of checkmate if I was going to mount the hyd jack upside down. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH sh@#@#@t. Its a good thing I can fill holes. Turned the template around and repeated the measuring process. Drilled 4 more holes and filled 4 more holes. I remember someone telling me this would be a relaxing project. Take my mind of work,,,yea right. Oh the joy I am having.

Spent the day cutting plywood and laying glass. I have both seat boxes locked down and the fist layer of glass. The rear seat mount is glued down and still needs to be glassed. Oh the fun.

Just spent a few hours going back over this thread and installing the pictures. I had them hosted at a free host site that must have gone belly up as they are no longer around and all the links where lost. Talk about major flash backs.

Decided today that I needed a break from sanding and glassing. Got the rear seat locked down and set in the right position. Figured it was time to make the side panels.
The rear portion of the panel will have a padded arm rest complete with cup holder. I am hopping this will give the illusion of a much wider seat as well as giving a place to set the old arm. Or as the wife calles it. A place to rest you head when trying to get a tan.
The front comes down that far because on the drivers side I am mounting the shifter a bit lower. The whole panel with be padded and covered in arctic white vinyl with the black piping.

I like the idea of puting the side walls in I did that in my G-W Invader I had. I used Luon plywood it's 1/4 in thick at the most, got the idea from the van-conversion company I worked for it has poly-fibers in the center very flexible, it looks GREAT ( Custom is the way ) http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Not to much. The seat base's are glassed down. The rear seat mount is glassed in and the side panels are cut and need to be sealed. Still have some sanding to do on the top and come up with the bow seat mounts. The digital camera died so I am waiting on the replacement.

Another layer of glass stuck down on the drivers and passenger seat box's. Call them done. Glassed in the rear seat mount. Spent the rest of the morning sanding on the deck. The rest of the time was spent trying to come up with a way to mount the front bow seats. Going to be fun. I think I have it figured out. Going to try and pull the out of the garage tomorrow and was the sucker off. I have about 4 spots to fix, then it will be time for the first coat of primer as I need to lay down a guide so I can find the rest of the junk that needs filled and sanded.

GOt rained out on wasing the boat off. Layed down the last layer of glass on the drivers and passenger seat bases. Don't think they wil ever move. Worked on a mounting system for the bow seats. Boxes are made. I will start the process of glassing them in tomarro. And the good news. Have a digital camera again.

A bit better.
Layed primer yesterday. No problem.
Layed black down yesterday on the deck and window frames, Again no problem.
Spent 4 hours tapping off the black.
Layed down the fist coat of yellow just a few minutes ago and its welcome to my nightmare staring MR. Fish eye.
Still not sure what happened. Its like a cruel joke. Did some one sneak into the shop and spray WD-40 all over everything????
So now the plan is to let it cure for a week then sand it all off and start over.
We now return you to your regular schedule form.

Well after taking some time to ponder the meaning of life I has come up with the following.
The yellow must have been contaminated. This was the stuff left over from the gal. I did the bottom with. I think if there was something on the hull then the primer and the black would have done the same thing. When I get all the prep work done again and will open a NEW gal of paint and try it again.

Sorry to hear about the troubles with your paint! I bet you are right about the contaminated paint though! Like you said, there were no problems with the primer or the black! That is going to be one beautiful boat when you get it done! Good luck!

Were you useing fish-eye preventer in the Yellow? and is it compatable with the paint, I had a simaler problem with a new paint I was useing, it wasnt compatable with my fish-eye preventer, WHAT A MESS. Also if it's hot and humid your compresser will make LOTS of water and it can get thru the filter/water seperator and cause simaler problems.

Thanks F150.
I thought about that. The paint does not call for fish eye remover so I did not add any. It may have been water, not sure. I am running 2 water separators and a in line dryer. Still pondering this one. When I get it all sanded off I am going to open a NEW 1 gal can of yellow and catalyst. Time will tell.

Gus when you want to put the next coat on go to the paint store and get the Fish eye remover called Smoothy it makes a great gloss, were the paints the same??? I have run into a problem if the paints are by diff companies
Guss I'm going to send pics of mine tonite late it's done finially now for the test run ( I told Supergenius -Shane that she gps'd at 88 ) boy ha made him get quiet, hope I'm not far off. I had to re-wire the whole boat ( I hate wireing I'd rather do the glass-fabrications )

Spent Monday night sanding off the yellow and the black. Got about 1/2 the boat done. Have to get the other half sanded off. That won't be until at least Monday. To dam hot here right now.
Reed, all the paint stuff is from the same company. I still think it was contamination in the paint can. I should have opened a new can.

Ok just thought I'd ask , if you put that additive in when you shoot the next time it will prevent any fish-eyes from starting even if there is some unseen oil or silicone that you can't see. just tryin to help. I had a set back fired the motor up today and it's ( real throttle responsive ) but the water wasn't circulating when I put the lower unit on some how the rubber gromit in the empeller houseing ripped and half way blocked the water tube off, so I shut it down and pulled it off and found the ripped groment, I was *#%*@ mad at myself for being empatient when I put it together and not put a new water tube in, it had a small bur on it I didn't see. Can you test the tempeture sender in the heads?? I have a new gauge and new wireing and it's not reading???? I'm proud of the engine build it is responcive and shakes the whole boat on the trailer when rapped up to a quick 6,000 rpm

The sanding continues. Just about have all the yellow off. We are back down to primer. I will have to shoot primer again. Ah the joy.
The bad part is I may get it back together to do some testing before winter, but I may have no water to run in.

Thanks for the support guys. Well the boat is washed. Was planning on tapping and covering everything with plastic today but with a temp of 101 the garage is WAY to hot. I have to take the 2 gal. cans of part A and part B primer down and have it shaken. Not going to take a chance this time. New cans of primer and yellow. Going to add some fish-eye-remover just to be safe.

Do you have a water seperator on your compressor or in your air lines? When Iwas painiting the predictor I would shut the compressor off and drain it every day so that water would not build up in. In a few hours I would get an oz. or 2 of water out of the comressor. Probably a bit overkillbut Ididnt want to take any chances.

Adam, I am running duel separators on the comp. and a in-line at the gun. When I am getting ready to paint I open both drains on the separators just a bit. Very little airflow but enough to let the water out if there is any. The compressor is behind a wall of plastic. Going to try and add fish eye remover this time. The primer will be from new un-opened cans, the same goes for the yellow. So glad I bought to much paint and primer. Its going to come in handy. If the weather holds I will be shooting primer tomorrow.:D

3 good coats of primer down and I am sitting here stinking up the house with the smell of fresh paint. Oh yea.
Give it a few days to cure and then its back to sanding. Then a wash, rub down and then spray the black. Wait a few days and then tape it off and shoot the yellow. Hopefully for the last time.

Well after many days of sanding again the job continues. Did the final sanding and wash yesterday. Spent the morning laying plastic in the garage and taping off the boat. ( I should have bought stock in tape and plastic sheet). Mixed up a batch of gloss black and layed down the first coat. So far so good. I added fish eye remover this time. I don't want to have to do this again. Only 4 more coats to go. Then wait a week and tape off the black and shoot the yellow. I will get some pictures of the black later today.
