I think coop is talking about the 24 " transom.....we had 2 hull molds one with a 20" transom and the other 24".....for XL shaft's.

I had a 87 Starflight with a 200 Merc. I sold it in 1998. Let’s see if I can remember the specifics. It had a 5” hydraulic CMC lift, and I want to say it ran the best with propshaft about 2” below the bottom of the boat – it did not have a pad. It had a slight stepped haul, and you could really hear it aerating the water when you hit a certain speed. Seemed a lot heavier in the bow than my Pulsare although I think it was like 50 or 100 lbs lighter. Only had a 29 gal tank, I was always running on empty. If I remember right, it ran about 65 mph with that 200 Merc, that would be per GPS. Awesom boat, but inferior to the Pulsare model.

fnshrmaster:

What top speeds are you getting. I have a 1989 with a 200hp Black Max, and I can only run 56 mph on the speedo with 2 people and a half a tank of gas. This seems low to me, but I have nothing to compare it to. If anyone has any tips, I would appreciate it!

first, whats the tach reading - pitch of the prop - hieght of the motor. honestly thats in the ballpark, (be it the low side) of a starflite with a older(tired) 200 with 2 people and no go fast goodies. your hull might be holding water. check the bottom to make sure its straight - no hook. check the compression of motor. after that you need to get the motor up and out away from the hull with an extension bracket and or jackplate. low water pick ups. better prop. safty equipment. ect. ect.

Thanks merc! I was looking for confirmation. It seemed low to me as well. I bought the boat last fall, and this spring I took it into the dealer for a complete going through. Compression is ok. I do not know what prop I have on, probably could upgrade that. The motor spins at 5900 - 6000 rpm. As far as the engine rigging, I believe that it is completely stock. No set-back / lift. Just the way it came out of the factory (I think). I will be getting a new boat in a couple of years, so I do not want to stick a ton of money in this one, and then take a bath when I go to sell it (ie new engine/jackplate).

check the how low the engine is on the transom might be able to raise the engine 2 or 3 holes up for free. make sure no hook is in the bottom. freebee. take out the front bow cushions. nada

I have a stock '92 starflite with a stock '92 200 merc xri. there is no transom jack...the engine is in the middle holes on the set-up. I'm a fat guy (280lbs) with just me and 1/4 tank i hit 65 on the speedo( in the right conditions) ...with the engine tilted up running a 23" tempest plus prop. with the old 24" michigan i could hit only 62on a good day on the speedo...I think merc 245 is right...check on the holes where you are bolted in...also that tempest is a great prop...good luck

The prop will make or break any boat, you need to find out what you have then find some freinds that will let you try there props to see and feel the diffrence.
